How can I find time to ride?

I don't know how many of you are in the same boat but here is the dilemma.

Tour of California starts May 16 - 23 on Verses 5 shows it looks like

World Cup starts on June 11 and runs through July 11. At least the games are not on a t 2 AM this year. Even if the USA does not advance this is one thing I do not miss. Have on the bucket list to attend a World Cup.

Tour de France starts July 3 through the 25th.

Almost 2 months of stuff on TV I do not want to miss. Maybe just set up the indoor trainer and watch and ride? We do not have a DVR or other device but this may be the motivation to get one.

Anyone else have this problem!

Make sure that you get two DVR's. My wife fills our's up with Lifetime movies, Biggest Loser, American Idol etc... and erases my DVR'd bike races on VS because the memory is used up. Heck, a couple days ago I wanted to watch the Cav's in the playoffs and went down to our basement family room to watch because she was watching Dancing with the Stars. The cable box would not let me watch my basketball game due to her recording two different shows at the same time while she watched a third upstairs.

Get a DVR. You'll wonder how you lived without it.

Different terminology but we call it a DVD recorder so hope its the same.

But if you are going for a DVR- think about a Hard disc recorder. With satellite over here being common place- it is built into some Receivers and they are fantastic.

But my problem is not getting the Stuff recorded- It is finding time to watch it on the recorder and still get work and sleep in.

And going onto higher technology- My son-in law has satelite with a hard disc recorder built in- He also has an X-Box that will record TV on the hard disc and his high end Mobile phone can link into his broadband line and then into the Hard disc and he can watch the recordings on his phone- while he is at work.

I don't as I have trouble even working the mobile phone.

Over here, a hard disc recorder is a DVR. Recording onto a DVD is done with a DVD recorder.

Watching others compete even at the highest level is never as satisfying as getting off one's own butt.

+1 I sometimes wonder how the guys that ride a lot of long distance rides, find time to work around the house. I'm mean like paint and wash windows, or other jobs that may come up.

I used to NOT do stuff because I liked watching TV too much but I have stopped because I was missing out doing that stuff that I liked.

Watch the reruns later, no big deal really. Go ride.

Isn't that why they established "recovery weeks"? I just spent 3.5 hours working on our homes deck after work today, as well as last Sunday and Tuesday evening. Window washing days always seemed to fall on a government holiday that my teacher wife didn't get.

If you want more ride time you might consider selling your TV. I have been TV Free since 1983. I believe this allows me more time for archery, biking, reading etc.

Back in the old days, the solution was 3 letters, V.C.R. now it's DVR or PVR same difference, World Cup is easy, don't get me wrong, I love soccer, but it's the video tapers dream, there really is only about 5 minutes in a match that is important. You also only need to watch about 6 teams, England, Brazil, Germany, France, Italy, Argentina. If team USA is lucky they will do as well as they did in 2002 with a win, a draw, and a loss.

As for watching bike races, who cares, I would rather be out riding myself.

Looks like the answer is to go shopping for a DVR or something that will record the shows. I know there are going to be conflicts with scheduled rides and who knows what.

I can't imagine missing anything I want to do so I could watch something on TV. You just make the choice--whatever's more important to you is what gets done.

The last house I lived in seemed to suck up the weekends. That's why I live in an apartment. Landscaping, painting, repairs, all done for me.

I used to have that problem, but now I limit myself only to the most interesting matches/stages. Life's too short to spend it in front of the TV. I admit, though, it'll be a challenge to choose what World Cup matches to watch.

Ride at lunchtime as your way to get to lunch! I do this daily using a Dahon folding bike that I keep in the car.

Serious answer:

Commute by bike. You don't need a "commuter" bike if you pack in everything you need for the week on Monday, and bring home the laundry on Friday. Being car-free, I use a variation of that.

On Monday I put the panniers on and schlep in the week's worth of work clothes, lunches and snacks. On Tuesday and Wednesday I ride my roadie, taking the long routes to and from work. The only concessions to commuting on that bike are the lights. On Thursday, at the end of my four-day work week, I put the panniers on again and bring home the laundry.

We've been having wonderful weekday weather this spring, and perfectly crappy weekends. (Today's forecast, lower-50, rain, winds in the 30s and 40s. Snow tonight.) I'd lose my sanity if I couldn't get in nice, long rides going to and from work on our glorious weekdays. Today, while I'd rather be riding, I'll get to those chores I put off during the week.

Snarky answer:

Put down the remote, get up out of the Lazy-Boy, and engage in real life.

Since I changed careers, after I finally figured out that I hated the people in IT, the second best change I made in my life was taking the TV to the curb. It's been about eight years now. My life is much richer without it. Anything that remains of interest--Nova, Frontline, the occasional bike rice--I can watch online.

Who watches TV anymore! Its all available on the internet and you watch on demand. Maybe not just yet, but in a few more years. The transition is coming, internet connected to your TV/Monitor.

I watched too much TV in the pass 30 years and now I need to make up for it by getting out doing things such as riding. Speaking of, why are we on our PCs when we should be out riding!
