My wife and myself use the stuff on rides over 3 hrs. Mix into a paste. I use 1 1/2 scoops per hr. My weight is 160lbs. Returning from a tour where the average day was 70 miles and 7000' of climbing. We love the stuff.

Have tried a number of the products and the only two products that work for me are a light does of Hammer Gel during a ride and Endurox R4 after a ride. R4 is like a miracle product for me. However, I just could not handle all the other products during a ride for one reason or another. I carry bananas and Lance peanut butter crackers. The sweet and salty peanut butter bar is also okay. Orange slices at sag stops agree with me as well. Like others, a 12 oz Coke (be careful to not do much more) along with the peanut butter crackers is simply heaven near the end of a ride.

Also, dumping water on my head, neck and back on long rides in warmer weather (while not nutrional) does as much as any food supplement!!

I started out using Accelerade for rides, and Endurox R4 for recovery. While researching nutrition for the Furnace Creek 508 in 2007, I checked out Hammer Nutrition products, and liked what I heard from people who had used them, so bought some to try. On short rides I have used Heed, and on longer rides, Perpetuem. I did not see a real difference using Heed, so have settled on Perpetuem for all rides needing fuel. To me that is 35mi or more. I also use Recoverite after rides.
The only thing I was not too keen on was the mild flavor. After using the Accelerade, Perpetuem was almost bland tasting. I started mixing 2/3 Perpetuem with 1/3 Accelerade to punch up the flavor. Same with Recoverite--2/3 with 1/3 R4 for flavor. It makes it a LOT more appetizing to me.
I don't like to worry about spoilage, so carry a pre-mixed freezer ziplock bag in my hydration pack. One bottle for energy drink, and one for water (to mix another bottle, or refill my Camelbak, as required).

There are several books (electronic) that Arnie sells. Have you purchased any of these on nutrition?

That Maltodextrin, I contacted E.T. Horn in La Mirada and its two bags. Each bag is 50 lbs. and total cost is $115.00.

The Hammer Perpetuem does tend to cake up when mixed with water. Arnie Baker says Maltodextrin comes in two versions, one of which does not cake up. Sales guy at E. T. Horn could not tell me which one cyclists get but he did say its the M-500.

What type of powder electrolytes do you use in your mix?
