True enough Kentucky was a border state, there were indeed quite a few fierce battles. As I recall from reading Grant's memoirs he cut is teeth in KY, it was the campaign there that got him McClellan's job. So maybe no Piggly Wigglys but surely a lot of 7-elevens.

Great ride report BTW!

I'm not sure but Grant took over from Buell during/after the Battle of Shiloh. Buell led the Union forces against the rebs at the Battle of Perryville, about 50 miles from here. Tactically the Union lost because Buell was a moron, but strategically the battle convinced the Confederates that they could not hold Kentucky and they withdrew to Tennessee.

There is a ride to Shakertown that I'd like to do that passes near or through Perrysville. Some nasty hills I'm told. The Shakers themselves helped the casualties of both sides without rancor. They respected Union ideals of equality but thought the Confederates were nicer people. Go figure.

At first I thought you might be right - I am not a thorough study of civil war history. I only read Grants & Sherman's Memoirs and a few biographies of Lincoln and that was many years ago. Being a native Virginian I should know better. In taking a moment and refreshing my memory the engagement started at Fort Henry in KY, and the led to Ft Donelson in TN. True - it really was the engagement at Donelson that gave him the "unconditional surrender" moniker which led to his key promotions which took him to Vicksburg where he got the whole kit & Kaboodle. So I think from that it could be argued either way (Like Campy or Shimano). In any event, Grant was a doper.

Daylillies are spectacular in NJ right now too. I thought last year was good, but this year is even better. We've got a lot of lillies/irisiseseses in the backyard which give use different jolts of color through much of the summer.

My grandparents were from W. Kentucky and I have lots of fond memories from my childhood. Mostly relating to biscuits.

You stopped at the Starbucks when there was Skyline Chili right next door? Are you mad? What better way to blow up your guts along with your legs.

Thanks for the pictures. I was in your neck of the woods years ago for the Open when they played Valhalla. The first couple of days it was even more humid than Florida (where I was living at the time) and then a blessed cool front came through and we had perfect summer weather. I hope you have a great summer.

When I lived in upper East Tennessee the flowers were called Outhouse Lillies.

We have always called the orange flower thingies "Ditch Lillies" since that is were they always grow. I caution you to never try to cultivate these on your property. They take over the world fairly quickly. When we wanted to rid ourselves of the overwhelming mass of them, it took two years and massive quantities of "RoundUP"

How sad is that, I was so impressed with the bike that I totally missed the "Skyline". I went back and took a second look.

Hey Weak-nice bike, nice commentary, nice worms. You could mix them (the worms) in with four and twenty blackbirds and have an interesting pie.

Great ride report!! Also, I am glade to see that you have angled your bars up alittle to lift the hoods, I have taken some grief (from the young ones) for doing the same but it's about comfort.

This trip generated lots of good karma which I foolishly squandered on the Tuesday Night Worlds. I'd never been on it before and it was a take-no-prisoners kind of ride. I was dropped after 10 minutes (I'm embellishing, it didn't take that long) in spite of pulling a Garmin verified no auto-pause-in-effect average 16 MPH including stop lights and such. My soul was crushed......

I would never attempt to do something like that in the evening...I need to be fresh, like first thing in the morning. You set yourself up for failure...or you didn't use enough PED's...whichever.

Well, in Arkansas, its legal to pack heat in church, so I don't see why they wouldn't have a weapons cache. It might make the collection plate more interesting.
