I have one of each - (in order of acquisition) - mountain bike, sport touring bike, long wheelbase recumbent, short wheelbase recumbent, classic Italian road bike, fat tire touring/trekking bike - I think there are still some more categories I need to complete my collection.

Two. One Airborne Manhattan Project, which is going on a ride in 35 minutes , and an old, but still functional Cannondale M700. I want one more, but my wife, who usually leaves me and my purchases completely alone, has strongly suggested that I need to sell one of my bikes in order to buy another. Sad. Soooo sad!

1972 Schwinn Sports Tourer, 1970's Sears Free Spirit "FS".1982 Schwinn World Sport, 1984 Schwinn LeTour, 1986 Trek Elance 400, 1989 Trek 1400 Aluminum, 1986 Bianchi Sport SX, 2004 Giant OCR3. +1 early 70s lugged unknown frame with front wheel (Sunshine hub, Wienmann alloy, suntour skewer), Shimano 600 52/39 crank,
Suntour Downtube power shifters. Lets see, that makes 8 and 1/2 in only 11 months on a road bike after a long lay off(45 years). I am working hard to control myself.

I can't remember the last time I sold anything, let alone my motorcycles, of which I have 8 or so, along with 4 bicycles, and the wife has 4, and a tandem.

That is a beautiful collection. I especially loved the Schwinn and the Trek.

This is a difficult question to answer accurately….
So, if I haven’t forgotten any, that amounts to
23.5 keepers between my bride and myself
7 being temporarily held for the kids
5 with uncertain futures
I didn’t count the Kickbike
35.5 bikes total!
I paid for them all. I maintain(ed) them all. I count them all!
That’s fewer than I thought there were….go figure!!

I'm down to 3 now (of my own, total count for family is 8).
I have my road bike (2008 Fuji Roubaix RC)
My commuter (2007 Schwinn Le Tour GS)
and my rigid MTB (1992 Diamond Back Ascent EX).
Would like to add a vintage steel roadie and a tandem some day if I find the right deal but what I've got fills my needs well.
