Fountain of Youth

Tonight when I was on the final leg of my "training ride", I slipped the chain onto the big ring and brought her home at a steady 23 mph. They'd probably laugh at me on the Road Forum, but for a 55 year old on an early 1980s vintage Columbus SL steel road bike it was like discovering the fountain of youth. Once upon a time in the 1980s I wouldn't have given this a second thought, but to be back here again after all these years . . . to feel the exhilaration I once knew and to realize "I'm BACK" was truly awesome.

Life is good. Beer is on me tonight!

I love a decent tail wind too!

Wish I'd had one . . . might have pushed it up to 28 mph! :thumb:

Welcome to the forum, gramps!

4% downgrade?

stapfam 08-24-10 02:23 PM

You ain't back yet. Perhaps a little lift for this ride- but you put so much effort into it- You will be back to 18 for the next ride. If you aren't- then you didn't put enough into todays ride.:(:(

Performance increases come and go like a graph. Little increases will come- but you will slip back for a while. Then the next high point will be for a little faster and a little longer. Look at the graph in a years time and 23 will be slow.

And mines a Pint of Spitfire.

I'll have an IPA... great job.

Good for you. A great ride. Can I have for a diet coke since I don't drink?

I was acquainted with the ex-wife of a relative of the Shepard-Neame empire. Mrs. Neame said that I should give the brew a try while I was in London back in 2002; I took a train ride to Canterbury with my BritRail pass, stopped at a pub and had a pint of Shepard-Neame Spitfire for her. Ah, yes, she was a spitfire...

I drink Diet Coke too, although I prefer Coke Zero. Enjoy!

Well, congratulations, Cat! Sounds like a nice ride.

They'd be calling 911 for the meat wagon to come and haul me off if I tried that. I'll have to admit that when I'm in Cenla, it's nice not to have all the hills. We may have to meet up for a ride sometime when I'm down that way. I'll bring a bungee cord to tie around your seat post.

Hey doctor j - I saw the "NW AR" in your location. I'm originally from Fayetteville and cycled extensive around there from the early 1970s to the early 1980s. I used to ride from F'ville to Eureka Springs (apx. 45 very hilly miles), spend the night there and then ride back the next day. It is waaaaay too flat here in Prairieville and I really miss the hills (and the fall foliage) of the Ozarks.
