What's For Lunch?

We are getting to the point where we are going to be doing some longer rides. Assuming the are no restaurants in the area , what do you take for lunch?

I rode a century yesterday. I took Clif bars (2 but only ate one), dried apricots, honey (in little plastic pouches), and ate peanut butter & crackers (two times) supplied at rest stops. Once in a while, I'll eat salted cashews from convenience stores on a normal weekend ride.

If you want a sandwich you can buy salmon, tuna or even pre-made tuna salad in a 3 oz envelope and put some bread in a zip lock bag. Make the sandwich whenever you feel like eating. Throw some cookies or gorp in another bag and maybe a banana.
Works for me. If I ate 2 Clif bars I would have indigestion/nausea.
You can also make pb&j sandwiches.

Fruit, cheese, mini bagels, pop tarts, snickers bars will get me through a metric.

I sort of get nausea and indigestion with one but it gives me some needed energy.

Whatever I can find and carry. Bread and butter (if it's not too hot), hard boiled eggs, cheese, vegetables, fruit.

I lean towards fruit. It keeps well on the bike, has a good balance of nutrition, and, in the case of oranges and bananas, the wrapper is compostable in any roadside ditch or patch of weeds.

Although today hunger didn't hit until I was just a few miles from home. So basically, I took a banana for a ride through the hills of horse country.

Gu, Sport beans, Heed. I'll take peanut butter and put a couple of tablespoons in a baggie, bite off the tip and suck it out.

For long rides I use HEED in my bottles and put 2 scoops in a zip lock bag for every bottle I expect to be refilling, depending on temp and distance. For the recent 115 mi loop around Lake Okeechobee, I had 2 bottles at the start and 4 bag of HEED. I also drank a quart of gatorade at each of the 3 SAG stops at convenience stores.

Normally I carry 2 granola bars and perhaps a banana. Metric or over I carry a 5 oz squeeze bottle of honey, and a 5 oz bottle of my own goo mix ( 1 jar of natural peanut butter, 1 jar of nutella, 1/2 cup of molasses, 2/3 cup of honey, 1 tsp of cinnamon, 1 or 2 tbs of canola or other veg oil to thin as needed. )

On the recent 115 mi ride the organizer took sub sandwich orders and at 65 mi we pick them up and ate. I only ate 1/2 at that time. I should have continued to eat the honey and goo

Under 2 hours, nothing.

For longer rides, I take dried apricots, figs, an apple, a couple of protein bars and maybe some Perpetuem.

I tend to take fruit (apples, oranges, or pears but mostly bananas), fig bars, and always have a vanilla Power Bar in my seat bag.

This year I switched to Hammer Perpetuem on longer rides. As long as you have water, no need to eat. I pack a couple of energy bars or candy bars for variety, or stop for a snack if I can find one along the way.

IMO, what, when and the amount one eats is very individual and many solutions work well. I like to start out ahead in eating and drinking for longer tougher rides. For those, I drink a lot in the morning along with breakfast. I start the ride with a gel and target a 200 to 300 caloric intake per hour in the form of gels and / or the new Power Bar energy bites. I do not stop for restaurant or fast food. For easy, social rides or tours, I use the gels and like to stop at coffee shops where I may eat a bagel. I have been on Santana tours where they provided an extravagant, large lunch. I tried to limit my intake to a degree knowing that for the first hour after lunch, I would have to go very easy or suffer on the bike. In summary for long rides, I take in a few calories constantly consisting of food that I know I can process without upsetting or loading up my stomach. YMMV

Maybe a banana some Gu packs here and there and Nuun and water for anything over 4 hours. Below 4 hours to maybe 2 hours a banana and water/Nuun under that water and Nuun. I may take a Cliff bar and even eat it once in awhile on longer rides but I seem to bring it back most times.
I did 72 miles the other day and only had a banana and 1 and half bottles if water.

Organised rides and I rarely take a break till about 65 miles. Then it will be Creamed rice or a Marmite sandwich or both. But up till then I will have Dried fruit- some cake- cereal bars and some cheese as snacks.

But local early morning rides there is always a cafe en-route. I do enjoy a good breakfast after about 3 hours

How long is a "longer" ride?
Are there convenience stores or gas stations along the route? If so they'll probably have sandwiches, hot dogs, fig bars, bananas, dried fruit, etc. And an ice cold Coca-cola (RC Cola or Cheerwine in the South ) to wash it down.

I find that those Snickers Marathon nutrition bars are quite good. This is the part where someone asks "Are you crazy? Snickers? Nutrition?? You've been riding that fixie too long!" Well, they work, and they work nicely. I like the crunch dark chocolate.

Problem: They don't seem to be available at many B & M retailers, so Amazon it is.

150 cals, and darn tasty. They pack well in all but the hottest weather.

On the other hand..... I'm also guilty of wolfing down the occasional hot dog. There is an outdoor cafe in post office square (Boston) that sells damn fine hot dogs. They're kosher, so you "weirdness" is not permitted.

Clif Bar sold a nice "Chocolate Espresso" some years back, but for some reason, they took it off the market. Blasted marketing types! They're almost as bad as human resource types.

We normally just do the "Bar and Bean" combo, ie: Kashi Cherry/Dark chocolate soft granonal bar and a bag of Jelly Belly Sport Beans (non-caffine type) and try to find a place to stop for a lunch break on a longer ride. Both of these "taste great", not like chocolate covered road tar, that most of the "bars" tastes like, (jmho, ymmv), don't care for the liquid "stimulants" at all. Will source out a bananna or two also, if available and have added PB&J, if we can't find a decent lunch stop.
