Suggestions for bib shorts
I am about to purchase my first set of bib shorts. It is a big subject, lots to choose from and they can be a little pricey.
Any suggestions or favorites? I'll be doing 90% of my riding in Fl so I would rather avoid anything that could get too warm. Thanks Mike |
I just bought this years Pearl Izumi Pro Bib Short and can only compare them to Pearl Izumi Micro Sensor Bib Short fro a year ago.( I pretty much think they are the same bib short but only a newer model) I like both very much but this years chamois is better, imo, and the shoulder straps are a bit wider so a little more comfortable.
They fit very well and give good compression. Leg grippers keep everything where they need to be. I have ridden in high 90° weather and have not over heated at all. I plan to buy the Thermal version for the fall and early winter. |
I've got two pair of Performance Elite II Bibs and if either of them started to show signs of wearing out (about two years on one) or if I crash and ruin one I'll buy two more.
Seems like I got them a little less than the current offer but I think they are a great bib. |
Oh, no! I just looked and they maybe terminally out of stock!
I'm going to drop a note to their customer service and see what I get out of them as far as future availability. I guess you'll have to ignore my suggestion. |
I have Bellwethers and Cannondales and love them both.
|
I have used the PI microsensor bib, Bellwether and Falconi bibshorts. The PI and the Falconi are the most comfortable with the edge in quality going to the PI, but for the money, the Falconi were excellent (about 1/3 the price of PI). I ended up buying 4 pair of the Falconi and taking them to RAGBRAI this summer so I didn't have to spend my time washing them.
I forget though where I got the Falconi though. Online somewhere |

Performance Elite shorts are available in large, medium or XL. I haven't tried them.
I have some Pearl Izumi Pro bibs, but I like the Performance Ultra II bibs better. I have also tried Scatante bibs, but didn't like them as well as the Performance Ultra II bibs, which are about half the price of the Pearl Izumi bibs. |

The Elites have always been pretty good shorts and bibs, but I really like the current version of the Ultra II bibs.
I'm wanting a knicker for the cooler days that may eventually get here. Doesn't look like they make a Ultra knicker and the Elites are out of stock. Oh, well. |
An XT rear derailler is the same wherever you get it from- in fact most Shimano rear deraillers will fit as a replacement- They are all the same except quality.
Not the same with clothing. It is one of the things you should try before you buy. Saves you the return postage if it doesn't fit. Lecture over but To a certain extent- Quality is worth it. I used to be of the opinion that if it fits and it is a good bargain- then get it. Have now found the "Better" quality clothing in Giordana and it does pay. Not only on the fit- The comfort of the liner and hopefully the life of the items. Still look for a bargain though but I always get that from my LBS. |
I recently bought two pair from longcycle.com aqnd LOVE them. Much better than the Perfromance shorts I rode for many years. I will say I like the Perfromance shorts as well-- but these from Longscycle are far superior.

Buying cycling shorts and shoes is like a trip to the wallpaper store. When you find one you like, no matter what it costs, buy two more from the same place or you may be sorry later! A different run of the won't be the same. Even one from a different store might not be the same.

Ooh! Looks like a similar pad! And the description of the body fabric sounds good, too.

consider suspenders.. can help hold up any shorts. that have a sufficient waist band for the gripper to hold.
Kucharek Helenca shorts never were offered as any other style Unfortunately they didnt have sales figures to keep making them .. a not lycra bike short that is comfortable ,with out being rubberized. have 3 pair I got for a year long bike tour. now I rarely leave the town limits.. |
Give Aerotech.com a look. I have two of their house brad bibs. Since these are my first bibs, and can't compare them to anything, all I can tell you is that they are well made, in the USA, and are very comfortable, and the price is good too. The service of the company is also very good. My last order, a jacket for my wife, shipped within 12 hours. I ordered it Monday night at about 10:00 PM, I received a shiping conformation by 9:00 AM Tuesday morning.

Add me as another very satisfied Performance Ultra II bibs wearer. Check the coupons, wait for a sale, and give these a try. If you're near a Performance shop, even better, you can try them on.
In a previous lifetime (over 20 years ago), I was a huge fan of Assos, and if I had the spare cash now, I suspect I'd be again. However, for the money, the Ultra IIs are really nice. |
Pad looks good and the fabric covers all the right spots. My dilemma here would be sizing. I'm a medium in the chest, small in the hips and XXXXXXXXL in the waist. |

Here is a link: http://www.aerotechdesigns.com/bibshort.htm One hint - ask them to install the black pearl pad in lieu of the standard pad. No extra cost. The most comfortable pad I have used in 25 years of cycling. |

sorry it took so long to answer-- I bought the 'no-name' when they were on sale at $39 per pair. Not sure which ones they are in the current catalog... hope that helps-

Cannondale. I like them better than my Pearl Izumis or Specialized.
