Ride Motivation

For some reason, this video helps get me ready to ride.

https://www.vimeo.com/12166348

I think the guy recording is 52 years young! (and the guy singing is a drag queen)

Huh. We all get our motivation from different sources I guess. That video motivates me to get in my car and door an urban cyclist.

I loved that section where they are riding along the MUP, with all the opposing traffic blasting by. Just like most paths I've been on, shows that they don't make these paths wide enough. The vehicles coming the other way were almost comedic, especially when that streamlined recumbent comes shooting past!

Does car traffic in New Orleans go that much slower than anywhere else I've ridden? Cars were constantly being passed, and the riders never got passed! I was in NOLA once, about 15 years ago, and don't remember the car traffic being that slow (except maybe in the French Qtr!

Three things at work here, I think.
  1. Joey and his clan are all really strong and fast riders.
  2. Joey used to commute through the Quarter, so there's your slower traffic, and
  3. the only speed limit signs I saw were 25 MPH.

Even I have no trouble keeping up with and passing traffic on 25 MPH streets. I replaced one 25 MPH street (Park Ave) on my commute with a parallel 30 MPH one (East Ave) because the car traffic on Park was slowing me down. Actually, it was the police cars waiting for me and pacing behind me that did it. I don't want any speeding tickets.

Wasn't that a Diana Ross song? Ain't no MUP that's wide enough?

FWIW, this version of "You Spin Me 'Right Round" is by Marilyn Manson, not so much of a drag queen as just, um, creepy. The original version, by Dead or Alive, is one of my favorite 80's tunes. Lead singer Pete Burns is the drag queen.

Yeah, that's right! I remembered that when I took my ride yesterday. One of the later songs is by Dope. I thought it was Billy Idol's original. I'm getting a little outta touch I think.

His other videos if anyone is interested:https://www.vimeo.com/user455142/videos

Lots of guys up here in Va Beach have that same attitude about cyclists. They don't want them on the roads at all. Lots of the 4 wheel drive guys think they have to floor it to pass a bike going 20 mph!

Living in New Orleans, I personally hate riders doing that - especially in the Quarter. It's a high pedestrian traffic area with narrow, poorly maintained streets. Delivery trucks, police cars and locals/tourists's vehicles all represent hazards that these guys are just ignoring. I've seen too many bike vs tourist accidents to admire these guys. It gives New Orleans a bad image.

There's another video from one of them riding the wrong way down a one-way street with traffic. Dumbasses.

At the 1:24 mark I thought the whole things could have ened quite abruptly for one of the riders....had the truck door on the right been opened.

One more note: Although the aggressive riding is real, the video is sped up in post production so the illusion is more dramatic.
