Why was the AARP thread closed?
 

Just wondering. Did the OP request it (too much of that lately, IMO) or did someone ahem whine about it because it wandered away from the prevailing 50+ ethos?

I was looking for honest replies and opinions about an alternative to AARP. It got too political so I closed it. I didn't want it moved to P&R.

You started a clearly political thread (yes, I read it) and didn't want it moved to P&R? A mod should know better.

OK. As I was saying, just wondering. I'll drop it.

In fairness to the OP, he was much more likely to get a response about AARP on this forum than he might have gotten on, say, the fixie forum.

I have a tip for very old drivers - 21st.com Whenever a "very seasoned" driver calls my office for a quote we refer them there. My Mom is 91 and I just had her get a quote off their website as her State Farm premium almost doubled - it was less than half the price. 80s or 90s, sometimes 70s age range It is the old AIG program for older drivers. It's all done online and really easy.

There was a whiff of the odor of politics in the first post.

Once I clicked on the link, and saw "that person's" picture staring at me, I knew everything was headed downhill.

I certainly would be more interested in a discussion of AARP here (where we have some experience with them) than in P&R, where there will be reactions that are all over the map. The discussion will get sidetracked no matter what, but the sidetracks here will not tick me off nearly as bad.

Hmm, I suggested in another recent thread that someone who just turned fifty join AARP and had no idea AARP was so controversial ... and I still don't on account of the AARP thread disappeared. AARP was not the controversial part of the discussion. The thread is still there, it is just closed. You can read it but not post to it.

Look at AMAC as an alternative to AARP. AMAC is a far better organization. www.amac.us

The very first headline on their page is political (very political). That's not what I would be looking for either there or at AARP. I'm more interested in being 64 and finding an organization to represent me without the politics.

Thanks, I read the thread. My only observation is that if I quit every organization where I disagree with some of their stands I wouldn't belong to any. My local AARP has been very good about advocating for pedestrian issues and this very often helps cyclists as well. They were right on top of it when I asked for their support when a bill allowing bicycles with electric motors to be classed as bicycles was amended to remove three wheeled bicycles from the bill. They understood right away that this would have a negative effect on seniors and got it fixed, so I'm not about to turn in my card anytime soon, even if I don't always agree with them on some of the national issues.
