New Wheel Suggestions?

As you can tell from my siggy line, I have a 2009 Specialized Globe Vienna 2 that I ride nearly every morning, about 4-5 miles just to get my blood moving. A few weeks ago I busted a couple of spokes on the rear wheel. Had them repaired and the wheel trued, but I was warned that it might not stay true and I might need to replace the wheel.

Guess what?

The wheel is way out of true again and I guess I have to replace it. Thing is, I don't want to spend much for a bike that pretty low end to begin with. The bike has about 450 miles on it so far.

So, what suggestions do you have for a serviceable but inexpensive wheel?

Buy a new bike- It's cheaper than the suggestions you will get here.:innocent:

Here is a set for $100 with free shipping.. Thinking about putting these on my Prelude I just got.

The stock wheels on the bike are something called Alex Z1000, which are not exactly the highest quality. They retail for about $28 each. The bike IS an 8 speed, and I do believe the drop out spacing is 135 mm. Tires are 700x35C.

Barrettscv, what do mean when you say "The front wheel does not use a generator hub, I would save that wheel for night travel" ?

I looked up your bike under the Specialized website. The page I found: http://www.specialized.com/us/en/bc/...=40433&eid=178 showed the model with a dynamo front hub and light standard. Does your bike have this included?

I would ask the seller of any wheelset you consider if the rear hub will accept a 7 speed cassette. You may have to add a spacer, but some 8 & 9 speed hubs will accept 7 speed cassettes.

The 135mm rear dropout spacing requires a Shimano MTB Deore rear hub, this wheelset also will accept a 7 speed cassette: http://cgi.ebay.com/Shimano-XT-Disc-...item4cf33a4841

DG,

I'd check in with
Blackmith Bicycle Wheels
5555 Santa Fe Street, San Diego, CA 92109
(858) 490-5300

The specialize in wheel building, they might be able to save yours with a new set of spokes and a retruing or have suggestions for a new wheel.

They fixed up the wheel on my Bianchi Eros when it popped severely just weeks after I bought the bike.

Was going to suggest this- Find a better wheel builder and get him to re-spoke. The hub and rim should still be good.

The Alex Z1000 is a single wall rim, I would not use it.

I recommend a consult with Rob at Psimet.
