Got a very nice Al/Steel combo with the carpet runners. Handles well and steers well in the corners.

How do you feel about announcing "On Your Left"?

You have to be so fast that by the time your call hits their ears you've gone by already.

You also need to make sure you have both front and rear lights so that you can be seen while tooling up and down the MUP after dark.

I think a horn might be a better idea. Perhaps a good Delta Airzound Bike Horn would do the trick.

Yes and the front lights should be flashing and aimed low as to not disturb those coming towards you.

If you are wearing a "full kit" on a MUP, do not pass anyone unannounced or at too high a speed.

Got any action pictures, what about a nifty set of lights for chugging around at night?

Get an air horn. You can mount the reservoir on a bottle holder and keep the pump on the other side. Of course, you'll have to have another bottle holder for the beer can. But this will get folks out of your way. You're an engineer, you can figure it out.

Hey, you can get some battery-powered LED lights and decorate your walker for the holidays! And add some sleigh bells to announce your presence! Don't feel old, sometimes young people need walkers too. A young friend of mine had to use one after breaking a femur and an arm in an accident.

That reminds me of my hospital stay after my lung surgery. The day after surgery, they had me walk a lap around the thoracic intensive care unit area. I had to push a wheelchair which contained the two boxes my chest tubes drained into, as I walked. I walked a second lap just for good measure. My randonneuring friends asked me if I stopped and got a control card signed at the nursing station.

You've really got to find a way to attach some drop bars onto that rig!!

I'll admit I was never a speed demon with my walker, it was set up more as a Touring/Utility walker. As far as passing most pedestrians, or as I got to calling them "Simple Bipeds" they'll blow past you before you can react to them anyway, so it's best to just let them do their thing. As I mentioned in the other thread, the ones you have to look out for are the high speed old ladies... the ones with the tricked out walkers with wheels on the front, and tennis balls on the back legs...

True story; about a week after my hip replacement I had to go to the Lab for some blood work. It was the first time I had really been out in public on my walker, and I was under no touch down weight rules for my left leg; so I was taking it slow and careful. I was about half way to where I needed to be, when all at once I hear "Get out of the way" and a little ole gray headed woman literally pushing her walker like a construction worker would push a wheel-barrel in a race, damned near knocked me over as she blew past. So, I don't know if "On your left" works very well, But, "Get out of the way" is not a good thing to say. I would have told that old woman too, if I could ever have caught up to her.:o The mood I was in, and the drugs I was on, she is lucky I didn't throw my water bottle at her. :notamused: Lucky for the old woman, my wife was parking the car at the time, and missed the whole event. :twitchy:

I think that I would pick a spot and sprint past (super shuffle) the person, then just as I pass by I'd ask "is that all you got?".:thumb:

Yeah, ya gotta watch out for those self-righteous old ladies. I was on my way to work a couple of weeks ago, still wearing my neck brace and sitting in one of the seats on the crowded commuter light rail (we call it a "Skytrain" here in Vancouver) reserved for the handicapped (which I figured the neck brace would qualify me for) when this obnoxious old woman says to me, "senior lady with a walker coming, you'll have to move!" and this old woman shuffles aboard with a walker. Fortunately, another gentleman got up, so I took his place and the shriveled old woman with the walker took the handicapped seat. But I was quite offended at how rude this first old woman was!

I find that what often works with pushy people, especially if you are 6'1" and 175 lbs, is to just "accidentally" body-check them into the boards. You have to quickly apologize profusely for your clumsiness, but it's worth it to teach them a lesson as they climb up out of the cheap seats! I use this with guys that try to get onto the crowded Skytrain before I've had a chance to get off, or for guys who are just plain inconsiderate and block your path.
