Kind of looks like techies turn out to be cyclist. I was a Customer Engineer for IBM for 47 years.

I'd bet it's no conclusions - the sample size is too small. Now hypotheses, that's another story!

I would disagree. It would seem to me the appropriate conclusion is that the social services/human services types do not understand how to take polls!! :)

Big Blue designs its own customers? That explains their success!

Do you design customers for others too?

Less than 8% choose "Potpourri/Other" which is far less that I anticipated. Evidently the categories, imperfect as some thought them, managed to capture over 92% of the respondents.

It is a real challenge using only 10 allowed categories to capture as much information as possible. I gave it a fair amount of thought prior to posting the categories.

Anyway, it has been a most interesting poll, showing once again that more engineering/computer folks are drawn to this forum (and to responding to this poll) than any other category. However, I don't think one can come to any more conclusions than this, given there is no sampling involved, and no determining reasons for non-response, etc.

Now retired after 40 years in the malt beverage distribution business. Worked as a branch sales manager for the largest beer distributor in the eastern US then finished my career as a Florida State Manager for a brewery.

Note to jim

Customer Engineer was just a fancy IBM Co. name for computer service tech.

I'm a construction cost estimator. I spent most all of my career since 1975 working on the contractor side of the industry. I now work for a consultancy that works primarily for architects and owners.

Much of the work that I do occurs from the conception of the project. This requires you to be able to conceptualize the project in order to come up with an estimated cost. There is very little in the way of drawings and other documents at this stage of the project.

I have also been teaching estimating both in the classroom and online for the last 10 years.

And dozens of odd jobs in the mix. I sold tie dyes, summers, from 84-94.
I've never been a 9-5 kind of guy.
Now I do forestry projects for a private holder when I'm in the US in the summertime.
We'll be old enough to collect my wife's pension in about 2 years.

Yen 12-21-10 12:47 AM

I voted Computer/Engineering. My work involves using a computer to maintain data and records for several hundred project personnel and to maintain an internal web site for a large space flight project. Prior to this job (same employer), I did Software Configuration Mgmt. for several different Earth orbiter projects. Before that, I was a nurse at a local hospital.

volosong 03-28-12 05:54 PM

By day I control an instrument on an earth orbiting environmental satellite at a NASA center and by night I teach at the community college, usually "Map Interpretation and GPS" and "Weather and Climate".

DX-MAN 03-28-12 06:46 PM

Job title is "Bike Assembler" at Wally.

Build BSO's (25K & counting), grills, lawnmowers, particle-board furniture, store fixtures, etc. 11-1/2 years in that position, 17 with the company. People have asked me what else I want to do; I've done the unloading trucks, salesfloor associate, department manager, etc. I'm holding out for CEO. ($35M, I year, GOOD-BYE!) I've seen what the management team has to endure, I couldn't do it without crippling somebody.

Looks like I will likely retire from there, in another 15 years (OMFG!).... Nobody's offering work at what they pay me.

xjken99 03-28-12 07:43 PM

I worked retail for the countrys largest grocery chain for 37 years until I retired at the end of 2010. After being retired for three months I went back to work for them again on a part time basis and next month I will be back two years. Once August 14th rolls around I will have 40 years in. I didn't get rich but, it paid the bills, put my son through college and provides a decent pension.

sharp.point 03-28-12 08:45 PM

Software engineer for Wall St. fortune 100 company for 16 years; actually I will be starting a new job next Monday; 10 more years to go, have to see if I can make it at least 5 years at this new job.

teachme 03-28-12 08:50 PM

Math teacher; currently 5th grade elementary. I also own and operate a driver's ed school.
