I'm 55 and need to text.

Why you ask ?.

'Cause I am still employed and a goodly number of my fellow employees are 30 or younger. Pretty much no youngster in this age bracket (0-30) can understand that a Cell Phone is just that - A PHONE, I.E. a device used to communicate VERBALLY !. Thus they pretty much never actually use their cell phones to TALK to someone, they use them as the next best thing, as an insanely stupid sub-miniature typewriter.

As a survival technique, I have learned to use this stupid sub-miniature typewriter to actually communicate with this age bracket and actually own an Android phone for such purpose, texting. It's not bad actually, it's like sending an e-mail.

I was such a good typist at the computer, but now they expect me to type with my thumbs on that itty bitty keyboard...........sheesh.

Our cell service in the sticks can be spotty, and there are times when a text will go thru but a call won't. We often find texting to be more convenient than calling. You can answer at your leisure. And you can keep a silly conversation going all day. I stay in touch daily with my wife, my sister, our 90 yr old dad, and our grown & nearly grown kids. It's kind of a cool way to brighten somebody's day. This has only happened in the last couple of years, but it's funny how much we text now. And you can bet I'll be using some of these new abbreviations!

I thought FWIW = For what it's worth...

Edit: Damn: You got me. I read the first one and posted this correction, and then read the rest. Sigh.

I am very annoyed when I am around youngsters who cannot carry a conversation because of texting back and forth. To me it is rude and I want to see how far I can throw their phones. Yeah I know I am old and out of touch. But I am proud of it!

gcottay 12-21-10 09:16 AM

IM(always)HO the list is insulting to seniors and completely off topic.

Foo bait.

My wife and I just roll our eyes when we're at a restaurant and see another couple and both are texting and/or checking emails. Sounds like a HOT DATE to me. :innocent:

We went out to dinner last night and some idiot had a text coming through every 2 minutes. The ring tone was annoying to say the least if not just rude.

I'm going to have to start using GOML.

you people that have never heard of texting apparently never had a teenager. My daughter discovered texting and soon thereafter she ran up a $50 bill in a day. My wife figured it out, told her she had to stop until we got unlimited texting, and my daughter ran up another $50 bill that day. Apparently it's addicting. There was a case in the last year where a governor ran up a $500 bill in a day texting his mistress.

The good news is my kids spell words correctly and don't use abbreviations I have to look up on urban dictionary. I find texting useful because my wife doesn't answer her phone. The bad news is that texting is the only activity where I notice I have arthritic thumbs.

In the near future it will be common to text via speech recognition. This will be a big advance, because you will be able to communicate with others by talking into your phone. I look forward to the day when you will be able to listen to their response in real time.

Oh, dream on.

What's this texting thing, does it have something to do with your cell phone, I am not sure mine does that.

Oh man, I had to tote that model Motorola around in the early 90's so I has the required jobsite phone onan airbase construction project. I hated keeping it charged and the super short talk time. The talk minutes were horrendous and we were constantly reminded about the cost by the book keeper.
