Vain, narcissistic, spoiled, childish, irresponsible, immature, sarcastic, fun-loving, immature [worth saying twice], obsessive, athlete.
53 going on 23. |
Commuter and recreational. Fitness comes from those two things.
I can do centuries, but I don't really like them. I have ADD and no matter what the activity, it's a real strain beyond 4-5 hours (which explains why I work part-time). I'm not fast enough to do a century in that time. Same goes for randos. (Which also explains why competition is out.) I like metrics though. I don't like pack riding with inexperienced people and prefer to give my charity directly, so charity rides are out. Touring? See the 4-5 hour limit above. Off road? I'm car-free in live in the center city, so I'd have to ride on-road for 30 miles or so to get to any legal off-road riding in my area. Not really worth the trouble. |
No competition for me, I was pretty unimpressive at that even when I had two lungs. Commuting became my focus last year, but I'll still do a few charity rides and some randonneuring.

I'm more Recreational cycling than anything else. The vast majority of my rides are solo which is by preference. I ride alone not because I'm anti-social but because I tend to stop a lot, wander a lot, and change my speed a lot. While riding my attention is on my surroundings, not cadence or heart rate or any type of performance input. I do occasionally participate in group rides and often hang near the back. If I'm not the slowest rider, I'll hang with the one who is.
I do commute by bike most of the time. My mood and the weather are major factors in how much or how little I do commute. I'm fascinated by the mechanicals of bicycles and I can often use up a lot of my riding time out in my garage tinkering and learning. Conversely I also have spent a lot of time riding when I should have been servicing my bikes instead. Again, the mood thing kicks in here. The combination of my mechanical fascination and the fact that I have always been easily dazzled by bicycles may explain the variety of bikes in my modest fleet which includes tandems and singles, road, mountain, hybrid, cruiser, upright and recumbent, trikes, and some short-lived production oddeties such as Alenax. I just like to play with bikes! |
Recreation, fitness, century and off road (mtn biking) is what I checked. I've done lots of touring too, but not recently, so I didn't check that one.
|
I ride for fun, for fitness in my legs, and for the peaceful solace a ride can bring each day. :thumb:
That and I'm always tinkering with at least one of my bikes when I'm not riding them! :D:D |
I chose Fitness, Century, Charity, and Randonneur. I ride for fitness, and have rode at least 1 century each year. In 2010 I rode 2, plus the 300k (is 197 close enough to call it a double?). I added Randonneur since the 300k last week, and the fact I may ride more of them this year.

Recreational- I do it because I enjoy it so I reckon that is my main categorie.
Charity because I do any Charity rides I can ride to- just to keep the milage up on those mostly short rides. http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=184939 I am in the Blue and Yellow Offroad and this is still on the cards for me http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=184941 But randoneering is something I used to do but offroad. Plan to get back to these this year providing the road rides don't get in the way. http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=184940 2 Tandems finished the SDW this year |
Recreational, Fitness, Charity, Century and Commuter for me. Will add Competition this year. It all started with Commuting, which I saw as a way to work a fitness activity into my daily living. A year of that created a desire for increased fitness, a "need for speed", and a road bike. That took me to a Charity ride, club rides for Recreation and Fitness, and a Century. My (poor) performance in those led me to hire a coach and point towards Competition. Turning a weakness into a strength can be very rewarding.

I ride because it's fun (like being a kid again), for fitness (a lot easier than walking any distance, I've got nerve damage in my legs ), and for the Zen of riding / mental health / becoming one with the bicycle. ( living in the moment )

Cycling provides therapy, and it's cheaper than any other addiction I know.
|
I didn't see any choices for weird, goofy and silly...so I had to go with recreational, fitness and touring.
|
I went with Recreational, Commuting, and Touring... All though I haven't been "Commuting" for a while now, and our "Tours" are very short millage anymore... So, I guess "Recreational Utility City Bike Fred" would describe me about as well as anything else. :)

Recreational, fitness, commuting, touring, other ( I ride for World Peace, but it doesn't seem to be working.)
|
I love to centuries, at least until my last one. The Tour De Safford in Arizona was really tough for me. Had some medical issues which kept my HR down and the wind was brutal. These organized rides are getting to expensive for me too.

Voted recreational, commuting, and off-road, 'cos that's what I do (about a 50/30/20 split in terms of accumulated annual distance).
I don't 'ride centuries', though I've done 'em in the sense that I've set off on a morning and just kept going because it seemed a good idea at the time (next day has sometimes been another story). Don't ride 'for' fitness; I'm congenitally (defect of character) incapable of doing so, though I appreciate the fitness that naturally follows from 'being a cyclist', and if I can get enough of it (without 'trying') I might like one day to try a brevet. |

Recreational/Lite Touring/Club Social/and for me the most important, "UTILITY", my most important RACE is to make sure I get home fast enough with the FOOD, so I have solid Ice cream to put on my PIE!!! ;)

Did not see snot flicker, poser, doper, wheel sucker, pie eater, beer drinker, grouch, unfriendly, Freddly, unpassable, or friendly. So i went with rec, fitness, touring, and other. I am not fit yet so i am working on that, only gained 12 pounds over Christmas and New Years(pie, tamales, beer, you get the picture), when i ride i look around a lot so i guess that's touring, rec because its not a competition unless someone tries to pass and if they do surprise me then run them down just to show them i was just resting between sprints, and other because sometimes on a ride it becomes "Other".
