Finally---a short ride

After 2 months........hospitalization + walking aides etc, I was able to do a short ride today. I had joked with my friends that my first ride was going to be a ride to my mailbox and back. My mailbox is only about 150' from my house and it's all downhill back to the house!!

I got to the mailbox and just kept going to the end of the street----then to end of my subdivision...and then out to a short route I use for recovery rides.

I can't believe how much I've regressed. I kept telling myself to use easy gears, spin 80+ and just smile. It was really ugly from a riding perspective--my pedaling stroke was terribly choppy but then again not too bad for bad knees, ankles and feet.

I rode a whopping 20.55 miles and averaged 13.7 mph. Plus I was totally whipped at the end.

But it's progress........While the steroids eliminated most of the swelling this week, Friday I still needed crutches to get around due to the inflammation still in the knees, feet and ankles. But after restarting the NSAIDs Saturday I was doing well enough to toss the crutches. The weather today was really nice so I had to give it a try. 5-10 miles would have been plenty but I set a goal to do 20 miles and did it.

It feels more challenging than when I started riding 10 years ago. I don't see how in the heck I have ridden hilly centuries or even Ride the Rockies last year.

I just hope I didn't recreate some swelling in the joints. Tomorrow will tell!

Sweet!, that's good news jppe. I remember my first 20 minutes on the trainer exactly 1 month after getting my ankle screwed together. It only gets better, just don't push it too fast.

Amazing that you could ride so far and at a decent speed so soon after being in such bad shape. WTG But be careful and don't push yourself too hard too fast.

My bet is that 75% of Americans couldn't ride 20 miles if they had to.

I failed to mention that I've never heard so much cracking and popping in my joints the first few miles. No pain but tons of noise. I also had to keep my left shoe as loose as possible just to get my swollen foot in the shoe. I hope I can walk tomorrow.

You did it jppe! YAY!!!!

Well, yeah, if you did too much, too fast, too soon, you'll pay for a few more days, but then you'll know how to pace yourself going forward. You want to progress slow and steady to avoid setbacks. Best of luck!

Cool! At first I wasn't going to read this thread, because I thought it was gonna be another report from someone who was not riding because of cold weather but somehow got out for a short ride. But then I paid attention to who posted it. Glad I did that. This is indeed good news, and it must have felt great to be "whipped".

I haven't ridden 20 miles at that speed for a long time.

Great work My guess is that you're prouder of those 20 miles than you were on many longer mileage rides. Accomplishment comes in many flavors and colors. Hang in there and don't overdo. Type A's have a hard time holding back.

Yippee!! So happy for you, Joe. That's not really such a "short" ride, considering all you've been through.
