First Ride in Six Months

Sunshine and spring like temperatures, plus feeling a little bit of strength, encouraged me to take my first ride since August. During that month I went in for surgery for cancer on my tonsil and lymph node. Went through radiation and chemo-therapy from Sept. to Nov. Have been on a feeding tube since Sept. and probably have another month to go due to some swallowing problems. My weight is down from 188 to 145 which includes almost all my muscle mass.

Did ten miles on the MUP through the local greenway. Plan to start working out at the fitness center when the tube comes out as I will be able to eat enough to train.

It's been a tough six months and still some time to go, but it sure has given me an appreciation for physical fitness and being able to ride a bike.

It must have been great to get out on the bike in this nice weather. Best of luck to you in your recovery.

Great to see the recovery going forward. Use the fitness centre to get the body movement back and muscle strength up but use the bike to be able to enjoy the exercise.

Lost 40 lbs. Sounds like a new hill climbing bike is going to be on order shortly.:innocent:

Go man, go! :thumb: :D

I went through a similar ordeal two years ago with throat cancer. I didn't go with the feed tube and I'm not sure if that made it easier or harder. Either way it is a rough road, but one well worth enduring. It does get better. After a year or so of struggling to gain weight, I now have to take care not to keep gaining beyond my target weight.

Keep us updated on your progress. One of the things that made a huge impact on my recovery was the amazing outpouring of encouragement from the wonderful bunch of folks who post here at 50+.

If you're back out riding at all that's a positive step. Hope your full recovery is right around the corner.
