Thanks for all the post & replys. Found out today I also have high blood pressure, wander why, huh, I got that solved, stiff drink and it dropped 10 points. I changed my lifestyle, lost 46 Pounds & feel 18 again, but age gets us all, huh.

Had it from my surgeon that cycling has not caused any of the problems I had. If it did- he would have expected to see all the local cycling club members aged over 40 in the near future. It doesn't happen.
Over here- and I presume it is on the same scale in the US- The docs only get worried when the PSA level reaches 10. OR if a patient that has a regular PSA test has an apreciable rise on two or more consecutive tests. My first test was 16. But 8 years later and it is "0". |
Had prostate cancer 5 years ago. Had radioactive seed implants. Am fine.
Have bicycled 300,000+ miles. Bicycling neither caused (nor cured) my prostate cancer. PSA is below 1 and am 78 years old and riding 100+ miles a week. Get an annual checkup to be on the safe side. Pedal on! Rudy/zonatandem |

I guess about the only enviornmental factor is the consumption of lots of red meat, and I do that.

I'll be getting my biopsy results on this Friday (the 4th). Needless to say, I'm kinda-sorta terrified. I hope I don't have an anxiety attack when the phone rings Friday morning. I know that if it's positive there will be even more tests and more anxious waiting before a definate path forward is selected. I really want to have this all behind me (ingore the pun) in time to enjoy my daughter's College Graduation at the end of May. |

It was over a decade ago, but there were a couple of studies that followed European truck drivers and determined that exposure to diesel fumes contributes to prostate cancer as well as cooked red meat. I guess the key is to pick your parents carefully, avoid meat and don't drive big rigs. Most of us can do one of three pretty easily.

Please ask for numbers. Not all primary care doctors (like me) are as paranoid about the actual values: 0.3 is not the same as 3.0 but both values are within the normal range. Especially if last year your value was 0.3 & this year it's 3.0, you should know about the actual value. My father passed away due to prostate cancer so now I am at risk as I have the gene for it. I have had the test & the exam consistently. I hope that you can get a copy of the last few PSA values & know about your health. Namaste.

I would like to get a PSA test, but have no one look at it. Then in a few years, I could use it as a baseline.

Looks like you and I are on this ride together and it's uphill and into the wind all the way! Fortunately, many of our friends here have traveled this course ahead of us. A lot have reached out to me already and I've found their friendship and support to be of great value.

My Urologist, who is also a cyclist, says that cycling does not harm the prostate. The folks who did my ultrasound prostate test said that sex, cycling, or anything else that stimulates the prostate within 48 hours of the test, will affect the test. I had a high PSA, low percent free test, negative ultrasound, but the biopsy found cancer. Talk to your doctor about a biopsy. Good Luck.

lovetopedal. : thanks for the web page, it looks helpful. I've had 3 biopsy's all negative "so far"

Had my biopsy & yes the time waiting for the call was bad, but the phone call was worse, my fears were true I have prostate cancer. Only 1 of 12 came back positive. Like the post before said, KNOW YOUR BASELINE, mine was from .6 to .8 then was checked at 4.2. I had it checked 2 weeks later at 1.32 and my doctor said that was normal, WRONG, had it checked 2 more weeks at 1.24 by a doctor at Vanderbilt with a free number 0f 5 & he said my change was to much to let go with a family history, he was correct, sorry to say. Because of the family history i've been getting PSA & DRE for 6 years now, I knew my baseline. The ultra sound looked great the PSA was falling but I still have cancer in my prostate.
Total Gleason score of 6 scheduled for robotic surgery next month. But I'm hoping to sneak in a Metric the week before. Everybody get checked & you need to remember your baseline. Thanks for all the input. Ridinmurray |

I think he's wacko. I've been riding for years, without that symptom. |
Also, be advised that PSA results can be inaccurate & somewhat unreliable.
|
Thanks, cranky old dude.
All seems to point to signs of early detection & no spreading. Thats why I had it done for the last 6 years. |

If you do a search on the new "PCA3" test and then only read the pages from the most reliable hospital sources, you will see all kinds of problems with the old PSA test. |
1.2 here. Been holding steady for years. I have never been told that cycling increases the PSA level.
|
Hmmmm...kind of disconcerting...
My doc has been treating me for prostatitus (sp?). Had a spike on my PSA of 20 (!), now holding steady at 4. Might be asking s'more questions! |
