Grr!! - How's your wind forecast?
At least we aren't having tornadoes, although there was a small one in Eastern Colorado last night.

Gusts up to 35 mph in the evening. Memorial Day Mostly sunny. Very windy. Highs 62 to 68. Southwest winds 25 to 35 mph with gusts to around 50 mph. Monday Night Mostly clear. Lows near 40. Don't need a forecast- Windy all week and this morning went out to watch a Time trial start off at 7 am. At that early the wind was at 25mph and gusting. 5 hours later and it is stronger and the forecast is for cloudy weather and high winds all week---AGAIN.

One of the things that is wonderful about the tropics is there is almost nothing but light breezes, and they are convection winds. Early in the morning, it is very still until about 10 AM. Up on the hills the winds can get up a bit (like 20 MPH) but not a lot more. Down where we are, just enough to feel nice.
|
Somebody installed a wind switch in my saddle every time my butt hits the saddle the wind blows.
|
We get wind every day. It's our hills! Coastal Carolina is flat as a pancake!

Bicycle Maxim: For every uphill there is an equal and opposite downhill
For every headwind there is rarely and equal and opposite tailwind I've gone out into a strong headwind thinking the ride back will be great as I anticipated the tailwind, but it rarely happens |
29 with gusts to 40 today but down to single digits tomorrow.
This morning's out-and-back featured tailwinds on the losing elevation portion and a nice headwind while gaining. It's a rare day that I cruise in top gear so I enjoyed the nice high speed run and followed it with a nice slow smell the roses return. |
In the Texas Panhandle, it's always "windy". We just have to choose how much of it we are willing to endure on a given day's ride. :(
|
Staying on weather- We had a dry cold Winter with more snow than ever in the S.E of England. Spring came and no rain. March to May and the previous LOWEST rainfall recorded for those 3 months was 47mm. That has just been beat with only 12mm falling this year. Think we are finally drying out from October and November.

Yesterday I did a preview of the Buffalo Lakes Ironman 70.3 bike route in Lubbock, TX. It took me four hours to do 56 miles, with over an hour and half to cover the last 16 miles into a 25 mph gusting to 40 mph wind. At times, I was struggling to keep it in double digits even down on the aerobars. I spent 12 miles on the small chain ring and way up on inside of the cassette. When I got finished the temp was only 96 degrees at 11:30 AM.
My vehicle thermometer showed 111 degrees on the way home at 3PM. |

Hopefully the lake will be icey smooth tomorrow. Set to paint the house and by the time completed masking, the wind had picked up. Don't want to blow it around. Just asking for a 3-4 hour window.

Next few days, 10 to 35mph.
I did fifty miles this morning in gusts near 40. Cross winds so bad I stopped a couple times to let it calm down. |
Been unseasonably windy this year and I'm getting so tired of it.

twobadfish, I thought of sending a PM, but this may be of interest to more than just me - what site has that nice presentation of wind speeds for those of us to whom wind speed is at least as important as temperature?
Shows the entire weather forecast in pretty graphical format and its source is NWS. |

I guess misery does love company, I actually felt validated reading this strand.....Reno/Sierras has been awful this Spring.....it snowed last night! Tomorrow morning I'm doing a century (alone) and hope to get 50 miles out before the wind starts because turnaround will be northbound and winds are ALWAYS southerlies. Maybe I'll get to do the homeward leg @ 26 mph!
|
The wind determines my route. Leave home and ride into the wind, then turn around with a tailwind. It doesn't always work out that well but that's the plan.
|
I'm in Louisiana for the long weekend and apparently brought the wind with me:(, but at least no rain, cool temperatures, or tornadoes... suppose I'll take the wind.
|
never mind :(

Thank you so much for the link. This will become very useful. Already, it looks like late tomorrow morning to very early afternoon is the best time for us to ride around these parts. Thanks again.

Wind was a total non-factor in my rides this weekend and the long range forecast calls for more of the same. We do seem to be coming into several days of unseasonably high heat, however. :(
|
I did a metric century on Friday... winds of 20 with gusts to 33. It was actually two trips of 26 and 37 miles, and in each case the last dozen or so miles was into the teeth of the wind. The first ride, when the winds were higher, was on my single speed (which is I why I rode a geared bike for Critical Mass later in the day).
My wife wants to go for a ride but doesn't like to ride when the winds are that strong. |
LOL, we rode from C. Springs to Castle Rock, on a Metric Century route from our club, it started with "COLD FOG" on the 26th. with WIND, it wasn't much fun! We ran into road construction in N. El Paso county, the road for 10 miles was "soft sand", arrrugh. We left at 8am and got into Castle Rock at 7:15PM. We stayed the night in Castle Rock, up the next morning to head back to C. Springs. 40+ mph winds and gusting higher at times, we gave up at 30 miles and spent the night in Monument, CO. Up the next morning, to 40+mph WIND and COLD, had to put on all the "winter" riding gear we were carrying and we still were COLD, road the 30 miles in that gale wind and we SO GLAD to get home and out of the WIND! It's getting to be a PIA!! ;)
|
Strange weather this am. I checked out the early morning wind speeds on wunderground.com - winds were all over the place, with the strongest being near Castle Rock.
So, I left at 6am - absolutely calm here, fog lifting, chilly - I had 3 layers on and leg warmers. Got a few miles south and it changed markedly, with strong warm south winds. Removed leg warmers and a top layer. After awhile, turned around and let the wind blow me back, until I got near Parker, when it got cold again, and the wind was from the north. Got to the pool for a 30 minute swim. Weather inside the rec center was just perfect! :) |
We've had an unusually cool, rainy, prolonged spring/winter here. The winds have been especially wicked, blowing at 15mph+ almost daily. I tell myself the cold & rain are doable if only the wind would quit howling. Almost all my rides since March have featured insane winds. I'm really tired of it.
