Short but usefull ride.
Have a couple of threads going at present about riding with "Too" fit younger riders and my neighbours new bike. Well this is an amalgamation of them.
Rain this morning but Nathan (The neighbour) wanted to ride his new bike this morning so on with the waterproof top and of we went. Bit of wind aswell so we went inland to get shelter. 1/2 mile of flat and then the 8% for 1/2 mile. I told him to go and wait at the top. It was chucking it down and got to the top of the hill and he was not in sight. He had enough sense to be sheltering under a tree so turn right and see how he could cope on the twisty bits---and up and down-and up-and up. He WAS crosschaining a lot so got him using the small ring on his compact. First lesson done. Then the 20% bit for 100 yards. I stayed with him here till I told him to get out of the saddle. Second lesson done. Flattish for a couple of miles and I let him go. 25mph is too fast for me so I just let him go and did my own pace. First lesson for me in that if you don't like it-Don't do it. Couple more slopes and I followed him up. That bike fits him perfectly and he was getting used to the gears. Cadence a bit low at times so got him in the small ring on the crank and I struggled to stay with him but at least the HR got up there.
Still chucking it down so at the point we could get home quick or stay out all morning Nathan suggested going home. I did not disagree. Downhill and I was staying with Nathan even though he was pedalling and I was coasting. He had no rear brake or rather it was not working properly so I knew what the rest of the morning was going to be taken up with. Luckily that was easy to rectify with new blocks but gave him a couple of "Maintenance" tips and left him to clean the bike down.
That Jamis Ventura Works. It is set up for the rider and he likes it. He learnt a couple of things on the ride and I am certain he is going to be fine. I managed to get my brain round letting the other riders go instaed of trying to stay with them and although it was only a 12 mile ride- we got in 1500ft of climbing and my legs still work.
Now all we have to do is get the Son-in-Law riding with Nathan and I can go out and enjoy my longer rides in peace---Alone.
