Makes sense to me, but that may just be because it supports my position.

The nice aspect of most sporting events is that the one on the top step of the podium wins as determined by quantitative measurement founded in physics, score and time not argument or vote.

Having said that, I used to play a lot of tennis and belonged to a club. I was watching our club tournament and there was a match in progress where one of the most unorthodox playing styles was being used by one of my competitors. Another player commented on the style and said, "He is so difficult to play due to his style. I am a much better player than him with superior strokes but he ALWAYS BEATS ME." I said, "Yea me too." By analysis of our opponents technique and via argument, we deemed ourselves winners.

I guess that's why debating is seen as a competitive activity rather than one designed to further human knowledge.

Not much new in the article, but nice to see my suspicions confirmed.

When the debate is over, its good to break down the logic behind the reasoning. That's when the search for truth begins. Isn't that what Socrates was noted for?

It's my opinion that all important human activities are driven by hormones, just like all the other animals. An argument is not a search for truth or the optimum path through a complex series of decisions. It's an expression of a need to dominate or to steer a decision so that it will result in personal gain.
