Well, It's Official...

My 1961 Schwinn 5 speed Corvette and I will celebrate our 50th birthday next week (I on the 25th and the bike on the 28th) Fortunately we are both holding up very well - although the Corvette has had alot of "work" done and hence looks better than I!
Good to be here, no significant health issues and looking forward to the beginning of this next half of my life (and legitimately being able to post on this section of the forum)

Welcome aboard. And, yes, photos are in order.

Here ya go - actually can't take credit for holding onto her that long as I picked her up on the bay just a few months ago - I can take credit though for the frame off restoration - had her down to bare metal, resprayed, new decals, etc. When I decoded the serial number the proximity to my birthday was an added bonus - definately a keeper and one of the rarer Schwinns (5 spd Vettes only produced produced about 18 months from 1961-1962) over the years...

Very nice liiking Schwinn you have rebuilt. Welcome to 50+ and be sure to schedule you colonoscopy so you are checked out and verified as a 50+ member:innocent:

Thanks - actually had my first 2-3 years ago so guess I pre-qualified for the 50+ club! First and only time I had general anesthesia - felt like the best nap that I had ever taken, although felt strangely violated when I awoke, lol...

Corvettes are old hat. You need on of these to be eligible for the new cool. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tdhw-...eature=related

Cool looking bike, but I hope you have a good flat route picked out for your "ride your age" ride next week. 50 miles of hills on a cruiser might be a rough day. ;)

Actually wouldn't he be in line to do TWO brithday rides, one for him and one for the bike? :D: That wouldn't be such a bad thing as it would mean double Pie. By the way, Gee, you haven't expressed your opinion as to the best type/flavour of Pie.

Actually I very rarely take out the old girl as she is almost "too nice too ride" - the paint is still virtually mint and new scratches would really hurt - couple with the fact that it is relatively rare and valuable she is pampered and hangs from the wall on the basement - A "birthday ride" around the neighborhood is likely going to happen though!
As for the 50 miles - I have done 46 on my Gary Fisher HKEK and agree that 50 miles on a 50+lb 5 speed cruiser with a vinyl saddle (albeit sprung) would not be a great deal of fun!
As for Pie - unless this is some secret, middle aged society code word, lol - I favor Key Lime...

Welcome & an early Happy 50th Birthday!

JanMM 07-22-11 01:32 PM

Wow! That's a truckload of Schwinn electro-forgery listed in your sig!
My ninth birthday present was a 1959 Corvette. Not unlike my next bike, a 1973 Continental, it withstood semi-abusive riding without breaking down. I don't miss 'em.

Welcome!
