I Did Steps!

I've posted in other threads that I had a serious fall last spring that damaged several vertebrae and left me unable to walk without assistance. Plus, due to nerve impingement I had major muscle and strength loss. Today I am 10 days post surgery.

I've been walking in the stores using a shopping cart as a walker. Today it was time to see if I could do steps. I did them only using the handrail! It was 6 steps up, across a landing unaided and 6 steps down to a slanted floor. Then reverse for four repetitions! The legs were shaky but I had enough left to walk, unaided, back into the apartment for a cool A&W.

Progress! A l o n g way to go. But today is real encouragement.

May be a loooong way to go but it won't take as long. Once you get used to exercise-well the brain might but the body may not- you will come on in leaps and bounds. Just don't try a Marathon tomorrow- or next week---------------Maybe the week after.

The back may be recovering but don't forget the rest of the body. Bring that on slowly aswell.

The longest journey begins with how many steps? Keep up the good fight.

Given that I am just now coming back from a similar, though far, far less serious (I hope), injury, my hat is off to you.
Keep up the good fight but don't be in too much of a hurry. One day just cost me a week and a half of recovery.
But you have the right spirit and attitude for sure. BIG thumbs up!

It's good to know you are on the recovery trail. Keep up the careful workouts. You will be back with us cycling at some point.

If I use my current bikes that point is Oct 11. I can use recumbent and exercise bikes before then. I can even use a spin bike as long as I adjust the seat/bars to remain upright. I am limited to a 45 degree forward bend until 8-12 weeks post-surgery. There are some other restrictions like no squats, dead lifts, etc. Keep the weight down, no putting 120# on the bar. Isolate muscles so there is minimal strain on the back. But, overall within these parameters I can do work to rebuild muscle from atrophy.
