OK, I'm now 52 years old, and just got back into the cycling thing. I'm really loving it all over again. And as pretty much everything else I do, I go into things pretty seriously. Bought a nice vintage road bike, getting my road kit together for problems, about to get road shoes, I'm looking for riding clubs, but the hardest thing I'm doing is trying to figure out what to do about riding apparel!:o

Yeah, I'm alittle afraid of lycra and spandex! :twitchy:

I mean I love the whole bike jersey thing with team names and sponsors and such and I'm sure the biker shorts are the best thing to wear for long trips, but geez, I just cannot seem to get myself to buy them. I think I'm in good enough shape to pull it off, so what could it be? Maybe I'm just not ready for them? Maybe it's to soon?

Anyone else have a fear of spandex? (spandiphobia?)

Bike clothes don't bother me at all. These are my bike clothes:

Note that I have several pairs of cycling shorts and some jerseys; I just don't see much of an advantage in them. If you have a good saddle, you don't need the cycling kit.

Your bike clothes don't bother me either. I applaud you for being comfortable in them.

I do prefer performance shorts and full zipper jerseys. I wear street clothes when I commute to my office.

I told myself I'd never wear the "silly shorts" when I started biking. After several months of riding while wearing hiking shorts, I gave up and ordered a pair of cycling shorts. The looser shorts just seem to catch on everything when I'm getting on or off the bike. I've nearly lost my balance several times. Enough is enough. I can admit I was wrong.

I usually wear workout-style wicking T-shirts, with whatever shorts are handy, even unlined MTB shorts sometimes. But if I need to be somewhat presentable in a non-biking kind of way, I might wear a tropical-weight fishing shirt. These are very cool, extremely well ventilated and quick-drying. They even come in stripes, plaids and festive tropical prints (assuming you're feeling festive).

I find that interesting, the average life expectancy is: 79 for the UK so that would make 0-26 as young, 27-53 as middle aged and 54+ as older, not sure where they get the 44 number....
