I understand what you mean, by the way, i don't know if i'm gonna get stoned because i'm not over 50 and i'm posting here!!!
The thing is, i have the same confusion as what is defined as a "ride", for example, say there's two people, one does a 50 mille round trip but he does it hard core, full speed, max rpm's checks his candence, checks his time full on spandex/lycra, etc., and the second person does the same trip but he does it in his jeans, on a city bike and he takes almost the whole day because he is sigth seing...
which counts more as a ride????

But then again... When I get on a bicycle, it's not just a "ride", it's an adventure.

I count any ride, only interupted by water and/or food breaks, as a ride be it 1 mile or a 1000 with the former being a short ride (why it would be interupted is beyond me but. . .!?!) and the latter being, well . . . A VERY LONG RIDE (which if you can do with only water and food breaks please call the record book people cause I think you made the book!). Or as others have said; you determine what "ride" means. Today I have ridden 30.39 miles this morning. I may go out with my wife after supper. For me that is two rides one 30.39 miles the other yet to be determined but if I werer to guess it will be 3-6 miles.

OK, thanks for the input. I just didn't want to do my first -whatever- ride and then have someone say, "You really didn't have a -whatever- ride, you had 2 -half whatever- rides" because I had a Cliff Bar and some Gatoraide half way through.

If your the person riding, you get to decide, for me it's simple, if the ride ends when I stop and then I decide to ride again later, it's two rides. If I ride to the beach, see the sights, go for a swim, have some food, go for another swim, then ride home, then it's one ride, even if the initial part is 7-9am and the return is 5pm-7pm, because the ride didn't end when I stopped.

They are both equally "rides".

I have never seen hard and fast rules on this one. Count it as one ride or two. It is your choice. Personally, I would call it one 40 mile ride. Now if I went out in the morning and did a 20 mile ride and did a 20 mile ride in the late afternoon, I would probably call it two rides.
In the above example -- which happens whenever I commute to/from work -- I call it one ride, simply because the spreadsheet where I log my rides doesn't have enough room to list multiple rides per day! Plus, for me at least, I'm only logging distance travelled, so it's not germane whether I did 20+20 or 10+30 or 29+1. If you were on a strict training regime I can see why it might be more important to list the morning & evening ride seperately, especially if one were a tempo ride and the other was a bunch of intervals.
Clif Notes: Doesn't matter.

Your ride, your rules.

I had no plans to ride tonight. I did cut the grass and once done I got my cyclo cross bike out of the garage, put on mtb shoes and played around in the yard by riding over things, between trees and off camber's next to the pond. I also did some easy dis-mounts and mounts in the yard. I didn't count that as a ride.
Yesterday I went to my son's home in Columbus and installed ceramic tile in a bathroom we are making in his basement. He teaches school and once home from work we went to the Wednesday World's ride. The only hitch was that he rides to the "ride" and it's 14.6 miles each way. We had to hurry to get there, did the 35 mile fast group ride, then raced home to beat the darkness. 67 miles and 6 bottles later I am thinking that was 3 rides.

When Moses gave the rules to Retro Grouch it was something like this.
Rule 1.If a person leaves his dwelling place and travels for a day and then it is a journey.
Rule 2. If a person leaves his dwelling place and returns to their dwelling place to be refreshed in less than a day it is a journey.
Rule 3. If a person leaves their dwelling place a second time and returns on the same day it is a journey.
Rule 4. If a person leaves the house on the day of rest they may only travel 1000 yards before it is a journey.
Rule 5. Sooner or later a person must take the master of the dwelling place out or there will be no more journeys.

What we say here is only half as important as you think it is. A little moreso to us.

I call it all good! If you get on your ride (bike, trike, etc) and pedal, you went for a ride. I usually think in daily mileage, so if I rode in the morning, mowed the lawn, took a nap, and went riding in the evening I might say I went out twice today, or, I rode 20 miles today - I would not bother to say, "I rode twice today for a total of 20 miles".
It's da miles dat count baby~!

I count it this way: I do a ride and stop for snacks or just to sit a while and continue = 1 ride. I do a ride then come home to have dinner then the wife and I go for a ride = 2 rides.

Dear Gentle Readers,
I find this thread of the most unusual - yet delightful - subject nature that I assert to be an expert thereof. Having been what one considers a bicycler rider myself, I am indeed familiar with the concepts surrounding but not limited to bicycle rides.
So please let me interject my authority and expertise to this matter of defining a bicycle ride and take heed to comment further upon this wisdom I am about dispense.
A bicycle ride is defined as the act of bicycling for a period of time. So please understand that demarcation of each bicycle ride is usually a period of time relative to the period of the ride.
Therefore for those readers who wish maintain the customary considerations when regaling others with aspects of their various bicycling exploits they should take care of this note and commit it to memory.
A single bicycle ride is defined as bicycling performed for a period of time that is longer in time than periods on non-cycling, such as obeying traffic signals or eating or even resting. In some cases - such as Race Across America or Paris-Brest-Paris - a single bicycle ride can last for days.
In other cases, such as commuting, the cyclist does indeed make two bicycle rides in a day - which are punctuated by a longer period on non-cycling.
Now, Gentle Readers, I hope this renders this kerfuffle mute.
