It's not easy to get done. Mods must do it for you. A name change one at a time it one thing ,if they approve, but a wholesale group of name changes would simply be to much for the mods to handle.

Just how do you change your username?

Well, eveything i post i would say in person. In fact, just ask my family when they say "Dad!" don't say it!.
Screen name is what i am doing in regard to that forum. BF-LAriverRat, Socal3s-VR4flyer, 3sNational forum-Leadfoot, Card room- "The Sheriff", Military-1shoturdead, bowling-the machine, Golf-Mr. Long Iron or one putt. It would be dull if i just listed my name. |

I've always used my real name in forums, etc.
I know many have mentioned identify theft as a reason for using an anonymous name. I guess someone could obtain the necessary information if they were willing to dig deep enough but dumpsters, ATM's, mail theft and credit card use are the major sources of identity theft and much easier to obtain the necessary information. I've had one credit card hacked and I'm sure it was from online use. Thankfully, American Express is great at identifying a hacked account and the hacker was shutdown in a matter of hours. I had a new card delivered to my front door 24 hours later. Bud |
....by the way, my avatar is not my real picture.

My screen name is just a reflection of my profession(Quality Control Program Manager/civil engineer) and my professional engineering association membership that I am proud of (Society of American Military Engineers) and not an attempt at hiding anything. I always sign my posts with Bill so I am pretty transparent (my last name is Barnard, so that is out there too.) I won't post anything I wouldn't say to a person face to face, to my family members or my priest. So I am not worried about any reprocussions at a website or anywhere else from a post. If the site required my name I wouldn't have any problems with that but I don't really see the need.
The 50+ and Classic and Vintage forums are tame and civil so I am good to go here. Bill |

Anonymity seems wonderful to me.

That said, I shall choose to be as anonymous as I can be in all my dealings with the net that are not of a business nature where my personal info it required. Read this entire thread, prior to your reply, and after your reply (omitting any replies to your post) and you will see, that every one of us were giving *opinions*, and our thoughts behind them. It *was* a friendly discussion until you replied with the above. The OP was not demanding a rule change, nor was he demanding that we actually do anything~! He was simply voicing his thoughts (opinion), and giving us his reasons behind it. I agree with his reasons but as I stated above, believe it is a personal choice. I find that many that guard their identity tend to be the ones that post words they would never say in person. |
Oh and, yes, my avatar *is* my real picture, and my username *IS* my real name, and to keep it short, the first letter of my last name. I have given out my full name, real cell #, and primary email on this forum (and others) multiple times, and many on BF I have met in real life :)

In the interest of full disclosure, my middle name is Melvin - you can call me Mel - and this is what I look like:

I don't post anything that I wouldn't say in person, face to face.
I disagree about the advisibility of using real names, however. It's the security/stalker thing. |
As far as security...
I got into it with my bank(s) they want you to change your online password every 45 days and you can't use anything that has been used for the past 3 times. I pointed out that the last 3 times my credit cards/ATM cards have been hacked it HASN'T been through my password. Currently bank card security in the US is stuck using 1970's technology, and it is none too secure. I kind of prefer cash transactions but it would heavily limit my purchase of bicycles and parts. ;) Aaron :) |

The boll weevil, a pest that migrated into the southern U.S. around the early part of the century, brought cotton farmers to their knees starting in the 1920's(the depression didn't help). The town of Enterprise, Alabama erected a monument to this pest, to this day the only statue erected in honor of a pest that devastated farming and initiated better crop rotation and improved farming practices. I named a band "Weevil" after reading this, and soon after came up with my screenname, which I think is not only funny (at least to me), but a blessing to farmers if they "seenoweevil". :p
You can call me Karl. Some here already do and it is, after all, my name. :D |
I've not been this successful with starting a thread since my first colonoscopy thread. And no, Nightshade, this low-level magistrate is not advocating taking away any rights. In fact, I spend most of my time trying to protect people's rights from government overreaching. In the interest of full lack-of-anonimity, here's my wedding picture:

as a former member of the executive branch of gov'ment (thanks for all those search warrants, Judge!) I can tell ya that whether or not you use your real name here, unless you've totally been living off the grid, with your home, car and other property in a trust that doesn't link to your name, your info is out there for anyone to see. if you buy stuff on-line, have an email acct, a phone, a drivers license, own a car, a boat, a home, have insurance, rent an apt, your info is there. just look yourself up. most of it is free, but you can pay and get even more.
