Will To Overcome

Thanks, Brad. It's funny that there were posts with opinions going either way on this approach, and many experienced riders said that we should make certain that there is a contingency plan should it become too difficult. That is wise advice.

But in the end, it depends on the individual's fortitude. My friend on this ride was a lot tougher than I might have been had the roles been reversed. He persevered through obvious pain when the cramping set in. We stopped for stretching when safe to do so, and I kept exhorting him to press forward on the inclines. A lesser man might've said "uncle". The reward was a sense of accomplishment and the satisfaction knowing that he had overcome phychological and physical obstacles. It was cool, really.

I've ridden quite a bit with my wife on long-ish days with climbing, and she's pretty tough, too. But I would never challenge her to push through extreme pain. Husbands just don't do that, except in the delivery room. PG

^^this!

Conratulations to your friend for toughing it out. And hats off to you for laying out a good plan and providing good support. When the going gets tough, the good HTFU.

Phil - I live right by there so it's a shame that I didn't see this until now.

I'd have offered to drive sag if needed.

I was willing to take bets in favor of a FAIL... but then I saw the outcome and changed my mind. OP, you deserve a lot of credit for your planning and patience with a friend.

Iconic,
Thanks. Maryland State Hwy#67 is a really nice ride. MD Alt #40 is a little tight on the shoulder while climbing. And the turn-off and climb up to Monument / Skycroft is brutal. Have you ridden it before?

Phil

Phil, that was a great plan you had. I'll have to keep it in mind the next time I ride with an inexperienced rider.

Shows how there are varying levels of ability and fitness in an inexperienced rider. It took me several months to work up to a 20 mile ride. Then, a friend of mine who hasn't ridden at all this year and only one little ride last year went on a 20 mile ride on a nearly flat tire.
