Utah Car/Bike Trip
 

Hi from Elko, Nevada.

I've posted pictures from a car/bike trip through Nevada and Utah. The blog is still about five days behind. The biking doesn't start until the second page.

I enjoyed your blog very much. You seem like me - when I'm on tour and I see a piano, I'm drawn to it, but I also feel a bit inhibited - I don't want to inflict my music on others. Once on a trip through southeast Utah I came upon an old organ and a pioneer homestead site - the kind with pedals you have to pump to get the air flowing through the reeds. After the attendant saw me staring at it longingly, she asked, "Would you like to play it?" "Yes!" I said. It was surrealistic to play "In a gadda da vida" in that setting.

This past summer I rode part of the Great Divide route. We got out of the rain and had a nice dinner at a lodge by a lake. There was a piano in the lobby. My friends and I had been talking about music and favorite songs for days. Finally I sat down and started to play some of our consensus favorites. They seemed to enjoy it and I was having fun (and we were in no hurry to go back out into the rain) so I kept it up. Eventually a couple who had been listening called us over. They owned a vineyard in California and had a case of their wine in the truck. They wanted to give us a bottle to pay for the music. We carried the bottle for two days, then had a really nice celebration in the woods.

Anyone who has toured probably has similar memories - wonderful occurances!

Looks like a great road-trip. (Why should college kids be the only ones to have this kind of fun?)
