My Lake County California Weekend

This past weekend I traveled to Lake County up in Northern California with a friend for what was planned as three days of riding. It turned into two days of riding because an unexpected "rain event" developed yesterday and washed us out.

Saturday we did a 40 mile "warm up" ride, parts of it at a good pace. The weather was perfect - no wind, lower 70's temperatures, and dry. We rode from Nice to Clear Lake Village, went to a craft fair, had lunch, and rode back. On the way out, I was stung by a wasp on my right arm through my wind breaker, and the thing really nailed me! Ouch!!! Also, the roads aren't the best, they're pretty rough, there are few bike lanes, mostly narrow shoulders, and in places the shoulders are non-existent. However, it was still a nice time.

Sunday we met another rider and then rode around Clear Lake itself. We were a three person "group". The ride all told was to be 70 miles. The day started cool, some low clouds, no wind, and the traffic was very light. Then, the skies cleared, the temps were mild, and views spectacular.

The first half of the ride was done at a decent pace (16 - 18 mph), then the climbing started and the pace came down. The climbs weren't long, about mile and a half at the most, but they were 6 - 10 % and were a bit challenging. However, the following descents were a BLAST!

The second half of the ride took a decided turn for the worse. The roads were, as I said, pretty rough for the most part with really narrow shoulders. I ran off the (narrow) road at one point and took an easy tumble into some duff. That was stupid and embarrassing, and I was completely unscathed. My bike, however, suffered a little damage. The braking surface on the rear wheel (an expensive Easton EA90Aero) has some gouges on it, and I need to clean those up some how. Then, one of the fellas started getting some pretty serious leg cramps at about mile 40 and we had to really slow the pace plus we were forced to make many stops so he could recuperate. Then, one mile - ONE MILE - from the end of the ride, I flatted my front tire! Oh, well - cycling. It is truly "all good", no matter the little pitfalls!

Hey, Sara, how'd the vid from the Contour HD come out? That sounded like a fun ride nevertheless. I think a lot of the roads around there are going to be pretty chewed up, and the ones that are not have a fair amount of traffic on them.

I shot an hour of video with the Contour and have only just skimmed through it. The descents, on the bad roads, are unwatchable, the camera was bouncing around waaaaaay too much! I thought I had it tight, too. The descents on the good roads are pretty good! The climbs and cruising seem okay, there wasn't enough "shock" to upset the camera.

It was a fun ride! Indeed, HWY 20 is well traveled, as is 29. Wow. However, the drivers (save for two) were very courteous - that was nice!

Riding new places is great, huh? Sounds like a wonderful trip.

I still don't believe your Strava power numbers!

AzT, there is nothing like "New Horizons". Those power numbers are ridiculous, aren't they? I guess I'm a real weakling!
