Ha ha, another reason to be 50+...

I'm a father of 5 daughters. I changed how I viewed chicks a long time ago. OTOH, there is a great group of 50+ riders at my end of the Vegas Valley. A lady with a nice bike is a very sexy thing.

But yeah, what is up with GM? Makes me glad to be a FORD man!

cooking14 10-13-11 01:42 PM

i love a man on two wheels

Rick@OCRR 10-13-11 01:50 PM

GM has pulled the ad. Guess it was a surprise to them that cyclists found it offensive!

Looigi 10-13-11 01:53 PM

I think the ad is fine and cyclists complaining about it is just sad.

Mr. Beanz 10-13-11 01:56 PM

I agree with a few of the other posters, thin skinned cycling people. Let me see, what chick is going to chose a ride on the handlebars vs a ride in a car? Cyclists sometimes make too much out of little things.

But then again, I aint offended by the little Mexican dude taking a nap next to a cactus or the Frito Bandito. :D

jdon 10-13-11 02:00 PM

GM lies.

Well, duh... And even if it was true, why would I want to hang out with a female person who doesn't ride?

Oh come on! How can you not believe the company that produces the Corvette, the official car of middle aged executive men who just got divorced? ;)

I am curious about something: Why does GM depict the young woman in the car as being a passenger, and not driving the car? GASP!!! Blatant sexism on GM's part.

We must be doing something right, if we got GM's attention this way.

...

Because on the flip side of the coin, the Chevette could have been the official car of middle aged executive men who just got divorced. :D

I think one of the most insidious things to ever come into our society is political correctness. It is simply a subversive way some people have of trying to stymie freedom of speech. People can’t take a joke or anything different from their own political view of how life should be. The truth is there are far fewer female cyclists than male cyclists according to most surveys I have read. Something like only 20 percent of all cyclists are female. That isn’t GMs fault but then there is no one to complain to about the fact. If we are offended simply buy something other than a GM.

http://bicyclinglife.com/NewsAndViews/Gender.htm

So while the ad may lack taste it doesn’t bother me much. But then I am married and not searching for one of the 20 percent. :D

But I was offended by the Old GT MTB ad that had a GT rider catching and taking down what looked like a Trek rider.

Life is too short to let these things get to us.

What does a lower ratio of female cyclists have to do with this thread? I read your attached article and still cannot make a connection between idiots who sneer at cyclists and a higher number of male cyclists. What, precisely, is your point?

tsl 10-13-11 07:00 PM

Did you see Giant's response to the ad?

Did you get the point of the ad and what they were trying to indicate? If not it was to point out you have a better chance of attracting a female if you have a car than a bike. (Very simple much like the light beer Ads or maybe the new Dr. Pepper 10 Ad.) Odds are that is true simply because of the number of females interested in cycling compared to males. It may have nothing to do with the Ad but it is the point that was being made. Come on they are targeting young men who think pantie raids are part of their final grade.

And TSL I did see the AD you posted and can't imagine car owners’ writing letters of complaint can you? And I agree with the second Ad.
Sometimes we simply need to put on our big people pants and move on, they didn’t name any of us by name.

I like both the GM ad and the Giant reply add. And the ad battle is better than the sum of it's parts.

TromboneAl 10-14-11 02:09 PM

I think the girl in the GM ad is checking out the cyclist's package.

I think the girl knows that there's no such thing as bad publicity

And wondering why her boyfriend has a beer gut, instead of the package…. Oooohhhhh…

Actually, I think the girl in the photo looks like she's wearing a halloween mask. But, that's just me.

Boy, this is a fun thread!

  • Giant gets their gas at a better rate than I do. :( (and the truck they show gets better mileage than the one GM showed, a pointless bomber of a thing that gets about 10mpg in the real world)
  • 15k miles/year means cycling 60 miles a day 5 days a week with two weeks time off.

Just the same, once I calculated my actual transport cost savings for bike commuting, including vehicle deprecation etc per year, I realized that I should have purchased a much more expensive bike :)

I don't get offended by car ads. But I also don't get offended by hemp festivals or any of the other ads aimed at feeding other people's addictions. Still, the ad war and the spoofs were mildly entertaining.

Mobile 155 10-14-11 11:28 PM

At least the ad didn't come to television. Many did but I don't remember much outrage. Sometimes you just have to shake it off.

It was just ignorance on their part. Around here, most students have the choice to drive their car through campus to some other place. Parking on campus is not gonna happen, except for a very few. I can pay $40+ a month to walk 15 minutes to my car. To get to class, they can either drive to a parking lot that is over 20 minutes walk, wait for the bus, walk or ride. Riding is very popular when the weather is good. The buses are well-used.

christ0ph 10-18-11 07:40 PM

I read recently that for the first time in history, the percentage of people in the US who drive, as well as the number of cars on the road, is falling. Plus, the US is now behind a lot of other countries in its car/people ratio. I think we are now 16th. (# 1 is Luxembourg, which is small, densely populated, and very affluent)

So, GM must be worried. Many people aren't getting their licenses in high school, and apparently, aren't so eager to start driving.
