We gotta be taking up a lot more server space with all these oldies!! 14 degrees here right now. I'm heading (in a car) to the YMCA this afternoon to use their great facilities. (Free benefit of my Medicare Advantage plan.) |
One year I got caught on a mountain ride (Glendora Mtn Rd/ aka GMR), surprised by pouring rain. Dropped down to 29 degrees. Soaking wet wearing an under layer, jersey and shorts. I felt my bike shimmying on the 20 mile descent. Got off to check it then realized it was me shaking. Got so cold that I wanted to lay down on the side of the road and go to sleep. That was the worst ride ever.
Other than that, by choice, climbed up GMR at night, 39 degrees. And once with a threat of rain, but prepared this time. Also in the 30's, some hail and snow. But was looking for something different. :D Other than that, not much cold weather here in So Calif. 39 degrees but we managed to stop on the way down for some photo fun! :D https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...cca2adcf80.jpg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...5d457faa3c.jpg |
I only ride during the day and the lowest temperature I will ride at is the high forties. Past 9 AM here in West LA/Santa Monica and along the coast or in the mountains it never gets below fifty degrees.

Hadn't really thought about it until this poll. And the temp that I'll ride in has gone up 20 degrees or so from when I was in my 30's-early 40's.
On Sat we wimped out at 17, 2 with frozen feet, me with pain on my frostbite damaged and sensitive fingertips after a few decades of year round outdoor activities. Not sure I want to try tomorrow, it'll be down to 15-16 or so again. I'm pushing 65 now and may pass. |
Here in Socal. We rode into the Santa Monica's yesterday, our usual stomping ground at our front door. Temps in high 30's in the canyons. Two layers, plus medium weight jacket, leg warmers, full face and head covering, short gloves with glove liners. Had to go slower at the beginning because my hands froze! Feet cold and body mostly okay. Only gear I didn't take were the lobster mittens but they are too bulky to stuff and the temps were expected to be warmer by mid-ride.
Yeah, it got into the high 50's near the end and I barely took anything off! This is about my limit temps for the start. Anything colder is a trainer day. We get plenty of decent weather days so no need to stress on missing a cold start. |
19 degrees a cpl days ago. wasn't so bad. good day for hot honey water

I'm going out today to do some single track. I'm waiting for it to hit 60 before I go.
Supposed to hit 79 today. |
With the windchill from the open air of the road bike, the low temps I will ride in are the fifties with adequate apparel. On my motorcycles, with a lot of gear, the lowest I ride is forty degrees due to black ice that does exist at lower temps. After riding for so many decades and now sixty seven, I'd rather jump on a spin bike and get a high intensity workout comfortably than fighting cold wind temps that chill me to the core. YMMV.

Annual Toronto Coldest Ride of the Year has come and gone.
That's me from 1:14 to 1:17. |
When I was a kid and had a paper route it was 6 days a week from 105 down to the low teens. Now, Im a lot pickier so Ill say 40-50 below that its just not fun.

Voted 51 - 60. We Floridians are wimps. I actually considered voting 61-70.

Coldest I’ve ridden in was about 25F, but I was only out there because it was in the middle of a long ride and it came as a surprise. My rational limit is right about freezing.
I think I might be persuaded to ride in colder climes if I had the right equipment. |
I have completely wimped out this winter. Doing all my rides indoors at the gym. It sucks, but better than not riding at all. I seem to have lost my tolerance for the cold.
C'mon spring. |
I live in northern CO. So the frequent sun and low humidity help.
Although I've ridden recreationally (not a racer) most of my life, this is the first winter I've ridden. My previous attempts at winter riding convinced me I just couldn't do it. But this year I invested in some good clothes and I've had some fantastic rides in the cold. If I'd answered the question last week I'd have said my lowest temp was 32. But I went out this week when it was 27 and I did fine. Don't get me wrong - it wasn't balmy. But I'm convinced I could go lower. I doubt I'd make it below 20. |
I don't care how cold it gets as I'll still ride. What limits my riding in winter is icy roads and idiot drivers who don't have the sense to slow down. Oh, really deep snow that you can make snowballs with limits riding too as he snow sticks to the tire knobs and then slips on t he snow under the tires. Bicycle wheel chains really help then.
Cheers |
As long as there's no wind I'll ride in any temperature. Last night it was 5°F here in the Chicago burbs and I was feeling a bit stir crazy so I took my eldest child's Diamond Back Outlook for a quick 9.5 mile spin. Figured it would be better in the snow than my Mirada.

My cold tolerance keeps getting worse with age (62 now). A few years ago I'd happily ride with temps in the 20s. I'd join casual group rides in any weather, even early morning rides -- and I'm definitely not a morning person.
But the past couple of years I've battled chronic sinus inflammation and cold dry air gives me severe headaches. I tried various face coverings -- paper surgical masks, balaclavas, microfiber mufflers -- and nothing helps. It ain't worth the hours of misery that follow an hour or two in the chill. So now I won't ride if it's below 50. If it starts warmer, as soon as it drops I head home. The only exception is damp weather. I actually enjoy the chilly rides in damp weather, as long as I'm wearing the right clothes -- rain gear or at least wind-resistant gear so my sweat doesn't get wind chilled. The cool damp air actually loosens up my sinuses and my head feels clear, although a lot of mucus expulsion is involved. I had planned to join a casual group ride this morning with friends I haven't seen for several weeks, but when I checked the weather it'll be in the 30s-40s until noon. So I wimped out. But I'll ride later this afternoon after it's in the 50s. |
Coldest temperature I usually ride is somewhere between 32-28 F (between 0 and -2 C),

Years ago, I lived in Michigan. I rode during the winter. I discovered that at 15 degrees Fahrenheit, it was so cold that I would not go fast enough to get a workout because of the windchill. But at those temps, I could switch to cross country skiing.
I moved to FL years ago. So it did not get cold enough to stop me. One morning, my water bottles froze solid. It was in the high twenties. Now my cut off is anything below 50 degrees which we rarely see. If we got a protracted cold spell, I would probably dig out my old cold weather garb and go out. |
Road salt and ice will keep me off of the road.
