First Fat Snow Ride

First snow ride today.
WOW!!!
I like FAT.

I suited up and aired down the tires till they were squishy (technical term) and out the door I went.
The conditions sound like a ski report. 6-9 inches powder/packed powder and the road conditions were mostly packed powder with occasional deep fun stuff.

Immediately I noticed the different handling of the bike. It was very stable in the snow and near wipeouts were in slow motion so able to correct or get a foot down.

After a few miles stopped and had a coffee. The first few miles were like a hard twenty five on the road bike.
Soon learned to become one with the fat and took less effort to get around.

Only real surprise was that after bouncing around on the low pressure ties they stretched out a bit and needed air. Of course I didn't expect this and had to stop at a sporting goods store to get some air.

The ride was good, learning how to handle the varying conditions. Bumps, what bumps...curbs became nonexistant and even went up and down several stairs.

At the end of the ride, after a few hours riding I was tuckered out. My leg muscles and smile muscles were wore out.

This is going to be a fun way to keep in shape this winter....come on snow.

Sounds like fun to me! Those look like huge tires on that bike; is it a Pugsley?

I used to ride in the snow when I lived in MO, and still do occasionally in the mountains around Big Bear Lake here in CA.

It isn't a Pugs . It is a Salsa Mukluk. Same mother ship.
The Mukluk is an aluminum non offset frame. The geometry is slightly different than the Pugs but they both get the weight on the rear wheel. The tires are almost four inch.

They do make a person smile while riding.

I envy you! Reno NV hasn't a flake of snow so far.

I liked your report. It looks like fun.

I take my mountain bike out in the city when there's no ice underneath, and just a couple of inches of snow. (Unfortunately, that's only a few times each year.) It's a workout, plowing through the snow. I can't lean into turns like I do in dry conditions, or it'll slide out in slow motion. So it's good training for balancing and being centered on the bike, instead of depending on the tires for grip.

Different kind of snow of course but I get up on the hills in the snow. Last winter was good riding but 15 miles was quite enough

All was fine till I found the snow drift.2ft was too much to keep momentum.

But stanard MTB with 1,8 mud tyres. Gave grip and steering.

I want one! Too bad they are so cashy.
