Are your bikes worth more than your car?

Won't be long before I pick up my new Masi. It cracks me up that it costs about half of what my car is worth (a 2000 Toyota Avalon I'm the original owner).

But it's a lot prettier, is better for me health-wise, doesn't pollute, etc. etc. etc.

I can't go carfree - it's just not practical.

I'd rather spend good money on bikes and bike stuff than on cars. Just hoping I can get many more miles on the Avalon. I'm only at 130,000.

Well, I paid around $1,575 for my Rodriguez fixie frame with S&S couplers, so the whole bike would likely be worth around $2,500 depending on what components & wheels it happens to be wearing. I got $1,500 in trade for my 2000 Subaru wagon, but it went towards my new $25,000 (before taxes and extended warranty) VW Jetta TDI. Is the Jetta worth 10x the fixie? In terms of actual hardware, yes. In terms of fun quotient, nope! Although both are lots of fun!

nope. both are pretty low value....

2001 f-150 2wd Maybe $4,500 on a good day. 135,000 miles, plan is to go a quarter million.
2006 Fuji touring - not a whole lot. Maybe 2,500 miles, plan is to get a whole lot more on it.

They've both been paid off since 2006

Altogether, the bikes are probably worth more, which isn't a very high bar. Last month I spent more repairing the car than two of the bikes cost - I'm still a little bummed about that.

Define "worth".

If you mean what they cost me, the answer is no.

If you mean what they would sell for (all the bikes vs. one car), the answer is yes.

If you mean their utilitarian value in being able to accomplish all of my transportation needs, the answer is no.

If you mean worth in the context of which gives me more pleasure, the answer is yes.

To me, my bikes are worth more than my car!

To the market, my four bikes might be worth $3500 to $4000. My 2005 Mazda 6 wagon is worth about $10,000.

I would not want the cash for either. What good is cash?

Our first house in 1957 cost us $9,500.
Our Zona tandem was more than that back in 2003..
It's all relative.

i spend more on the upkeep of my bike then I do on my car (replacement of components/tires/tubes). In fact I could have purchased two new carbon bikes based on what i've spent in the last 3 years. And yes... I put more mileage on my bike than my car (10,000-13,000 miles/yr). But who said that bicycling is a cheep sport? Bike toys are expensive!.

Tandem--Worth more to me than monetary value but I do not intend to drive all that often in the future. But that Tandem cost around $8000 and my car is only worth about $3,000

Collectively, all my bikes were worth way, way more than my old car. But the old Geo Metro finally died and I was forced to buy a new car ('07 Chev. HHR), so I suppose the answer is no.

I've sunk about $12k into a 2000 S80 T6 volvo sedan in the last 2 years (purchase, repairs, paint job). I could get between $4k and $6k for it and I hope to keep it at least 2 more years. I have 12 bikes (one is not built fully). Several are worth over $1k but I could probably get $500 average or $6k total. So the answer would be yes. I hope to keep most of the bikes much longer than 2 years.

Last June I bought a 97 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup with 107k miles and it took about $3k to put it on the road. It was paid with the proceeds of flipping about 40 bikes (mostly older low/mid end steel road bikes). If I counted the time I spent on the 40 bikes it would double the cost for the truck.

I can purchase a couple of flip bikes for the cost of filling up my car gas tank. I could probably buy a lower end carbon fiber bike for the last repair ticket on my Volvo.

2002 VW Jetta TDI Wagon (280K miles) $6K

It just seems small. Why, it's over 2.5 miles in length!

No, but based on how well I take care of the bikes vs. how well I take care of the car, they might as well be!
