I'm lucky. I work (mostly) from home, so I don't drive all that much. Today I had to fill my tank and the price was well over $4/gallon. Total was $61.73. Whoa!

Got me thinking. Wonder what bike accessory I could have bought for that money? For me, I would rather have spent it on some tubes, a pump, or maybe a cyclometer.

You? What would you rather buy for the price it takes to fill you car, if you have one, with gas?

At a dollar thirty eight a litre and a hundred litre capacity from empty tank I can buy lots of bling. Oh, for those who require U.S gallon values it works out to just shy of $5.25 per gallon.

No car personally but there are a few Hummers in the neighborhood and I'm thinking they could probably buy the whole bike for the cost of a fill-up!

Looked at those a few years back and was disappointed. There's neither room to fit a pair of skiis nor a bicycle in one of those.

Costs me about $55 to fill the tank of my Audi A4 Quattro. I don't really have any bicycle needs right now so I might go along with the suggestion of a nice meal out.

Actually, now that I think of it, it's going to cost me $45 to have someone weld a dropout on an '86 Raleigh Team USA that I just got. So maybe that.

I don't have to fool around with filling my gas tank anymore. I just have an ambulance follow me around when I ride my bicycle.

Well not as bad as Jethro's combine but my 4X4 truck would let me buy a really nice jersey or some bib shorts that I could really use. Usually cost ~ $100.00 to fill up with regular.

UK. 1 pound 35 per litre. 125 pounds to fill my 20 year old mercedes station wagon. Dollars at 1.54 is $192. That's an entry spec folding bike per fill.

Seeing as though one of my vehicles has a 43-gallon tank.

But yet we want more of these high fuel prices?

Which I plan to start spending on the bikes in the near future
When I start commuting to work everyday

the n+1 disease and I have had three bouts with it since october of last year

For the cost of a tank of gas I'll be it would be possible to find a fine beater bike at a consignment shop. My first bike was an 80s Peuguet for $65. Noting wrong with the bike at all but it was way too big for me.

I'd be able to purchase a new XL rack bag with "mini-panniers", instead of just trying to "cram" more stuff into my std. rack bag! So since you all are throwing away all this money, I'd be happy to take some off your hands, LOL just kidding! Car-FREE is a PIA but it sure makes life simpler!

Interesting concept, filling up the car. I dont know what mine holds. How much does gas cost? $20. Thats what I do, dollar cost average at $20 per purchase. I've bought a lot of stuff with the money I didn't spend on gas.

My vehicle has a 22 gallon tank and I know I could buy some really nice jerseys with the money it takes to fill it up.

35 gallon tank at $4.10 per gallon....$143 per tank would pay for lotsa stuff.

My baby, a '94 Ford E-150 Conversion Van has less than 60,000 miles on it.

We mortaged our house in order to purchase it new. To our friends and relatives it seemed an extravagancy that we didn't really need but be were preparing for our future. There were no maintainance drugs available yet for M.S. so the Van is set up to readily accomodate wheel chair options if the need were to arise. We used the Van for road trips with the family, hauling the girls and their 'stuff' back and forth to college, and occasionally for general purpose around town errands. I babied that truck in an effort to make it last as we knew we could not afford another later in life.

Well the kids are out of school and the bride never needed a wheel chair (yet) so what we have is a great vehicle for a couple of 60+ year olds to travel in and visit our daughters, or in others words a nice, spacious, comfortable vehicle to ride of into retirement in.

Well with a 35 gallon tank and $4+ per gallon gasoline at 13 - 17 MPG, I can't afford to drive the Van. So it sits in my driveway all summer as a backup vehicle in case our daily driver needs service. In the winter we load it up with our outdoor wicker furniture and cushions and park it in the garage. I generally run about one tank of gas through her each year just to keep it in running condition.

Moral of the story....an un-educated man such as myself should not attempt to out-smart the future!

On the plus side, I should be able to use it as a "Show vehicle" in the near future as it will be quite the oddity. We used to show our M.G.'s and it was great fun, and I can take along some nice comfy chairs and a picnic lunch and a cooler and an umbrella for shade and it's air conditioned....there you go! It's a collector vehicle! I think I just made lemon aide!!! Ain't life grand?

A couple of sale tires on Bonktown. Which I did buy. And then I filled up the tank too. Even thoughh my wife and I are both bike commuters, today we are driving to the North American Handbuilt Bike Show. Is that counterproductive> At least we're sharing the car.....
