Breaking Away Ride in Bloomington-April 15--Who Wants to Ride?
My daughter recently was married and moved to upper IN. I decided to combine a visit to her and her husband with a ride in Bloomington on Sunday April 15th. This ride is put on by the Bloomington Bicycle Club and incorporates riding some of the places and roads where the movie Breaking Away was filmed. Below is an email that was sent to me regarding the ride. I asked their permission to post this and thought if anyone else from this forum would like to link up, it might be fun. It's not a long ride but if you're a fan of the movie (like I am) this might be a unique opportunity. It looks like a laid back ride and my wife and I are planning to be there.
The BBC's Breaking Away Ride will be at 1:30pm on Sunday April 15, 2012. This is one weekend before the Little 500, so we might not be able to ride the cinders, but we'll be able to watch the real guys practice. BTW, the women's race is on the following Friday evening at 7pm under the lights, and the men's is on Saturday afternoon.
This ride is 31 miles long, and is a very slow interpretive ride. Allow for 4 hours! The first half of the ride will be out south of town and will allow riders to get their heart rates up. We do not have permission to ride or walk into Sander's Quarry, but the ride goes up to the legal limit. It's a about a half mile to the actual quarry. So, any trespassers could race to Empire Mill Rd, "trespass", and be back to the law-abiding riders before the ride leader arrives with the slow pokes. After that, ride slow with the pack for all the interpretive stuff.
The rain date will be Sunday April 29. Here's a youtube to get you psyched.

Could be worth a trip from the southside of Indy. I lived in Bloomington - took up cycling while living there - during filming and swam in that quarry a year or two before the movie. Watched a couple of scenes being shot. Don't see specific mention of the ride on their web site.

It does sound like fun, but I'm having a hard time finding info on it. I also looked at the club website and all I saw was a report on last year's ride.

I have traveled there a few times for the Hilly Hundred weekend. That's another ride worth looking into if you want an excuse to visit your daughter.

If you go here and click Calender, you'll find the ride listed.

Also, the guy I've been talking with (Jim) is mentioned in this write-up that another forum member blogged about last year.

I'm still planning to make it, although the price of gas doesn't make the trip from GA any easier.

Wife and I drove up from Atlanta for the Hilly Hundred a few times when we lived there - that is a long drive.

Hope that everyone from 50+ gets to ride that wants to do so. Not this year but as much as the movie meant to me, and still does, I'd like to have this one as a definite goal ride. Y'all have funn and ride safe when it is time for the ride.

I'd love to do it, but living in Dallas that makes it problematic...
Have fun though!

Anyone else? As long as gas stays under $4.00 a gallon I'm still planning on making the trip. Just got out my Breaking Away DVD as inspiration.

My wife/stoker and I drove down to join the Breaking Away ride today. We were both living/riding bikes in Bloomington in 1978 when Breaking Away was filmed.
Ride leader Jim is a student of the movie - he shared much info and insight about the film.

The home of Dave Stoller and his family. Current owner shared with us today that he was unaware of home's movie history until closing.

Starting point for the CinZano 100 race on Highway 46.

Back entrance to the stone quarry prominently featured in the film. It appears that the current property owners aren't welcoming of visitors.

Long-empty and quiet limestone mill visited by Dave's father in the film - he had worked there as a younger man.

Great Bloomington Bicycling Club ride!

JanMM,
Thanks very much for the pics and the post. After being the OP I feel bad I couldn't make it myself but some family stuff came up later in the week and it just proved not to be a good time to make the drive up from Atlanta. I'm glad you guys had a good time, that the weather worked out and guess I'll have to keep it on the bucket list for one more year.

Found that Comcast/Xfinity offers Breaking Away as a free film currently so we watched it this evening.

I see a guy wearing a purple polka dot Kenyon College cycling team jersey. He should have bought the shorts too (I did!). When my youngest daughter first moved to Bloomington a couple of years ago, we drove to all of those places while looking for apartments. She's a Kenyon grad.
