Small Bike Advisory

Big honkin' whitecaps on Chesapeake Bay. Winds 25 kts. gusting to 35. My usual 17 mph 20 mile ride took 1:24 @ 14+ mph.
It's hard to blow snot rockets in a crosswind.

I like the correlation; small craft advisory > small bike advisory = strong winds. But how much wind to create an advisory?

I think you did well at 14+mph in that wind. There are times I struggle to maintain 12mph in strong headwinds. Headwinds certainly add to the workout.

Sounds like a lot of days on the Great Lakes... Riding into a headwind is like hitting a mattress.

Yeah, this morning I was "What the H***?!? Isn't this the end of March and isn't supposed to go out like a lamb?" Actually did more than usual because I went to the LBS and had the seat slightly adjusted, rode 9 miles to test it and then home which turned a 23 miler to a 32 miler. Winds are supposed to be up most of the week in the Tidewater area. Just glad I don't ride where it's windy almost all the time. Props to those who have to ride nasty headwinds most of the time.

I was going to go out today.. 61 F and 10 mph winds yesterday... Today.. 34F winds NW 16 gusting to 29 mph. So much for that.

I was feeling the wind on my ride home from work last night -- fortunately it was at my back :)

Gravity Aided 03-27-12 04:39 AM

In my area , a small bike advisory would be anything above
30 mph gusts for road bikes and 35 mph gusts for mountain bikes .
A small bike advisory has been posted for your area . Be aware of gusting winds above 30 mph, and flying debris, garbage cans, and pedestrians, as these may inhibit forward movement. Winds of 30 mph may also cause conditions producing a Tombay. Sideways movement may also be produced in these conditions. Please stay tuned to National Weather Service Weatheradio for other watches and warnings included for your ride area.

I did the Seagull Century this past Fall. The last 25 miles were a *%^&%!. Yeah, the wind there can blow pretty good.

Wife and I rode to a brunch on Saturday. The 9 mile ride took 55 min. The return trip was less than 25 minutes; would have been faster but we spun out our highest gear. Fortunately, mostly head/tail winds. Cross winds can be a bear on a tandem.

I had an interesting commute yesterday morning... only 5 miles, but 3 were directly into the wind, which frequently gusted to 35mph+nearer the water. Spent a lot of time in second gear, on the flats. Ploddy, ploddy!

At least the wind didn't reverse itself for the return trip!

Gusts to 50 for this weekend are forecast. I am already seeing myself in the recliner for too much of the time. I hate the wind. It always finds my face.

+1000

At 85 miles I thought - 15 miles to go and I'm going 15mph - one hour more. Fifteen minutes later I thought 12 miles to go @ 12mph - one more hour. At 10 miles I was going 10 mph. It was the longest hour that month. I made the decision to do the full century before the wind turned against us. That was about mile 60.

I've had some rough commutes. You know the wind is bad when you're going downhill and you have to pedal hard to keep moving.

35 mph, in my case . When the wind controls the bike more than I do

EastOfMidnight 04-09-12 08:11 AM

Did even worse yesterday - 12 mph and the wind is supposed to continue. This is getting old!

Phil85207 04-09-12 08:39 AM

I had a friend that would say "the wind is my friend". I grew to dislike her.

Gravity Aided 04-09-12 04:39 PM

35 miles an hour winds today in Illinois, and a Red Flag Alert .

I commute to work most days. Through the winter I had many days with part of the morning commute straight into a headwind & the afternoon return ride into another headwind. I know God must have been punishing me for something.

The gusty wind gods came south this weekend. With the line up of the fronts and the "squeeze" effect this puts on the air mass flow out of the Gulf of Mexico northward made for some strong steady winds and hard gusts.

This is what feeds the warm, moist unstable air into tornado alley and starts the moisture feed to build the super cells. Throw in the cool-cold air mass flowing southward and you have the recipe for destruction and tragedy we have seen this weekend.
