How do you carry your jacket?
 

I'm looking for a good way to carry a jacket on my Trek FX7.5 bike. My under saddle bag is full of spare tubes and tools and phone and keys.

Does anyone make a lightweight handlebar bag made from nylons windbreaker type material?

I've seen the 'canvas' type handlebar bags but they are too bulky. Can anyone point me towards a more 'flimsy' bag?

That's what the pockets on cycling jerseys are for.

Last time I asked a question similar to yours, I was told to simply TTFU, so I don't ask such questions anymore.

If you wear a jersey with rear pockets, a windbreaker type jacket should fit back there nicely. You could get a frame bag as well, or perhaps one of those seatpost mount racks with a small rack trunk. I also managed to fit a windbreaker into a bottle cage once, using a velcro strap to help retain it.

On my road bike, it goes in a jersey pocket.

Just don't wrap it around your waist or put it on your frame where it could fly off. I know of a fatality where the rider's jacket came off and got wrapped up in the rear wheel.

we were riding with a guy who did that, and also got the jacket jammed between the tire and brake calipers. Could have been a real mess, but he managed to get the bike stopped w/o falling.

Couple of observations:

I can't understand why you can't put it in a saddle bag. If your saddle bag is already large and no room for a light jacket, you're carrying way too much stuff with you. It takes a VERY TINY saddle bag to hold the essentials: a tube, multi-tool, levers, patch kit, $20 bill. A slightly larger one, still pretty small, should also hold keys and cell phone if you don't carry those in your jersey pockets. A VERY MEDIUM, NOT LARGE saddle bag should also hold your windbreaker.

It just shouldn't be a problem to get a reasonably sized saddle bag that will hold a wind breaker.

That said, I just roll mine up and put it in my jersey pocket along with the keys, phone, Ipod, power bar, etc. Not really too much. I use a very tiny saddle bag for the essentials that never leave the bike.

My wife prefers to put her jacket around her waist. I was freaked out when I saw it and was ragging on her, but she is totally aware of the danger and actually secures t by simply removing her arms fromt he sleeves, leaving the bottom few inches of the jacket zipped, and tucking the sleeves and upper half of the jacket securely inside,a nd the whole thing stays tight around her waist/lower abdomen. Hard to explain, but it really is fool proof. I don't know why she doesn't just roll it up and put it in her jersey pocket, which is much simpler, to me.

I'm on Oregon's wet side. Do people actually take their jackets off?

They come some other way? Boy, I sure learn a lot on this site. Next thing you know, someone is going to tell me sunshine comes in some form other than liquid (and the occasional solid), shorts can be worn above the knee and sunburn is an issue for cyclists.

It's ironic what a few degrees of latitude will do, eh?

My jacket stuffs into its own pocket, and then straps around the waist with an elastic belt.

Endless varieties of bicycle-specific racks, bags, etc. to carry stuff in.

I have a fanny pack that I took the belt off strap and used nylon ties to fasten it to my handlebar. I keep my reading glasses and some food stores in one, and in the other pocket room for a jacket too.

Check out the above sites to see if any will work for you. When I have to carry more than I can fit in my jersey pockets, but not enough for my Chrome Messenger bag, I use a small REI fanny pack.

The search for gear that is adequate but no larger or heavier than necessary is never-ending. In summer, a surprising amount can be stuffed into jersey pockets. I even carry an extra water bottle there on very hot days and the extra weight is not noticeable after a few minutes. Recently I found a tiny duffel bag about the size of a loaf of bread. It is not made for cycling so it has no built in mounting system and so is very light. It is lashed to the handle bar and is just large enough to fit rain gear and a folding tire.

Jersey pocket.

If you do have to tie it around your waist, roll it up all the way first. You don't want the skirt effect- that's how the jacket gets sucked into your wheel.

I put it in the Brain Bag. I put a lot of stuff in the Brain Bag. On the last club ride I was behind a guy whose jacket fell off his waist and almost got tangled up in the wheels. Don't put the jacket around your waist. Someone else has already said that.

I sometimes carry a vest and a nylon rain jacket in my jersey pockets. If I need a bigger jacket and extra clothes I use a Camelbak. Have used handlebar bags before and a benefit of them is they can block the wind from your hands.

If you don't have a super baggy jersey, and it has gripper/elastic at the waist, just ball the jacket up nice and tight and jam it under your jersey, on your back.

Have a couple like this but I dress at the start of a ride for the weather expected.

I also have a Pertex Windproof that will stop wind and that folds into a fistsize to go in the jersey pocket and a "Showerproof" that folds almost as small.

Only bag on the bike is large enough for a tube- two levers and a puncture repair kit.

OP - I'm a big fan of the rear rack & trunk. There are some real nice small ones that are pretty aerodynamic. You can moutn a rear rack on any bike using Pclips fromt eh hardware store or cycling specific clips come with some racks.

Camilo - just ordered that ZIPP bag. Looks like it's worth a try for this or that.
