Back to work in a "real job"

Well, I was very fortunate and landed a job back in the telecom industry. I am site manager for data network upgrades on military installations.

All jobs have there negative aspects and their positives,

Negatives

100% travel - out 3 weeks, back home for 3-4 days
living in a hotel can be a lonely existence
hard to eat well

Positives

Its a real job with real pay. Will be able to get the savings brought back up to an acceptable level
Enough per diem to actually make a couple bucks pocket money
They get you back home on their dime
company vehicle with 100% paid fuel for business and personal while on the job.

Now how does this fit into cycling you ask??? Well, my first location is at Volk Field, Wisconsin. I am 25 miles from Elroy, Wisconsin. I will be picking up my bike next weekend and will be riding the Elroy-Sparta, "The 400", and Omaha in the next few weeks. (If my hip holds up)

:D

Congratulations and wishing you the best in your new job.
Same here. In this economy, I get a thrill whenever I hear of someone landing a decent job. Good luck and find a way to ride whenever you can.

Do you have/want/need a folding bike?

KenSmith 04-28-12 11:42 AM

D - no need for a folder. I have a 3/4 ton work truck to carry my fuji touring bike.
Thanks for all the well wishes.

Ken

Congrats on landing the job! Make sure that you have sufficient security on your truck to protect the bike. I have heard of too many folks working on the road and living in hotels/motels loosing a lot of stuff to thieves who break into their vehicles.

KenSmith 04-28-12 01:20 PM

Mort, I'll be keeping it in my hotel. I've already spoken to the owner, he rides also.

Great to see things are working out for you but as a recent retiree- Work is overrated unless there is an ulterior motive--Like money.

Great to hear Ken!
A few years back I rode my bike from River Falls, WI (near St. Paul, MN) to Illinois and rode the trails from end to end. Got on the Great River Trail in Trempealeau, WI, and got off the 400 trail in Reedsburg, WI, about 100 miles later, with the LaCrosse River Trail and E-S Trail in the middle. Great riding, beautiful scenery as well. Last summer I again rode the Elroy-Sparta trail end to end and back with my sister, about 70 miles. It was her first ride on that trail. Hope you enjoy the area as much as I did, and again congrats on the job!

Outstanding Ken -- I'm really happy for you.

Not just a job, but a pretty good job in your chosen field with a company that appears to treat you fairly.

Thanks everyone. I'm looking forward to riding these trails.
the job's pretty cool also.

Stapfam, I agree, however I'm about 10 years from retirement.

roccobike 04-29-12 08:05 PM

Congrats on landing the job. Travel on the job has really hurt my cycling time last year. This year I plan to either change jobs or bring a bike to the job and take time off for riding. Got to get priorities correct.

Been thinking of getting a job myself lately.
I have been retired for a long time now and am thinking of how it would be to get a job or move to Ecuador or Panama. Gas was 85 to 90 cents a gal when I quit working and I am on the same income now as then. Its getting tougher all the time.
