To everyone that is riding to work today, first timers as well as the dedicated people that have commuted all the time I wanted to wish you a very good ride to work and that the weather in your locale is great for riding. Thanks for that! I did ride today, only the second time this week. Job concerns and bad weather have kept me off the bike during the middle of the week, but it really did feel GOOD to get back in the seat and ride that 7.79 miles to work today and celebrate national ride to work day.

Oh - the irony:

I work from home.

Yet I got up at 5:45am and rode 10 miles to the location our local bike coalition designated as the start point for our ceremonial "bike-to-work" rally. I rode with about 60 other cyclists of all sizes, ages, genders, income groups and capabilities, stopped for a coffee, then rode back home ... to start working!

It was a well managed event here in Frederick, MD. Kudos to the organizers.

What with the city's new central "bike hub" and all the new lanes they've dedicated over the last year, BTW Day is a big deal here. The only problem is all the activities, and I mean all of them, are either in the heart of downtown, or they're on routes from various outlying areas to downtown. I live on the far north side and I work on the far west side, so unless I want to commute twice (once to downtown just for the hell of it, and then out to the west side for work), I'm left completely out of the fun. I know, I should make my own fun. If there were a decent route between home and work, I would.

Thanks, Bill. Absolutely perfect day for riding here in the Washington, DC area -- sunny, little wind, 52 F when I started in at 7:30, supposed to reach the upper 70s by the afternoon. LOTS of people on the bike trails and a real crowd at the Bike to Work pit stop I went to (Rosslyn, which is across the Potomac River from Georgetown). I did my regular 10 mile ride to work, but I may add a few miles on the way home.

Bill - great post, from a true gentleman!!Bike to Work day in Los Angeles was sponsored by the MTA and Los Angeles Bicycle Coalition and was really more of a week long event. A co-worker and I rode in yesterday, (about 25 miles - one way), and had a great ride. We rolled out around 6:30 with temps in the mid 50's and the sun already out. Made the trip in just a shade under 2 hours, (including a 10 minute stop at one of the "Pit Stops" st up around town. The trip home was a bit more of a challenge since I was riding solo, and there was a slight uphill grade on the way back - still made it home n 2hr 07sec.

Rode in to work via roads & MUPs - had to avoid about 5 bunnies on the MUPs.

Our Colorado Bike to Work day is not until June 27th. Also, I am retired. However, I did take an early morning 15 mile bike ride and passed at least 10 commuters - does that count?

Not bike to work over here but my Son-in-Law normally cycles to work. Hasn't been able to for a while but this morning- 15C- no wind and a yellow blob in the sky. Think he should have looked at the weather forecast as 20mph winds and rain coming from big black clouds right now-.

Perhaps I ought to get the Campavan out for a run and pick him up--Naaa- he's young and needs the exercise.

Coincidentally, I did bike to work today...and I was wondering
A) why are there so many more cyclists on the route than usual? (I chalked it up to the wonderful weather we have here, after ~4 days of rain) and
B) Why are those guys offering Free Breakfast for Cyclists at the end of the MUP?

I saw many new riders out today. I passed three "commute stations" on my way to work. They could not understand why I did not want to stop...I wasn't hungry...and I have been riding my bike to work every day for the last four years - so I did not need any new commuter tips But I did give each one a wave and a hearty "good morning!". Great to see all the support for cycling.

Today was the first BTWD going back about 10 years that I haven't led or co-led a group ride from the southside to downtown Indy. One year it was just me and the next year it was me and another guy. Much greater turnouts in recent years.
Couldn't join the 7am group BTWD ride because I had to be at work by 7am for a meeting I couldn't miss. So, I did indeed Bike to Work today. By myself.

I rode also, not too many other riders out as we are having rain showers all day. I was lucky on the way to work and didn't get wet...going home might be another story. Still a great ride.

I hit my first deer on a bicycle ( I was on the bicycle, not the deer) today during my commute..................... I was lucky; I posted about it in the commute forum

Me too. Normally 17 miles, but by the time I met up with a group (including the mayor), rode downtown, then out to my job on the west side, it was 23 miles.

The ride in was a picnic; the 17 miles home will be into a 16 mph headwind.

Well, I didn't work today. We are on a 4@10hrs. schedule but I did ride down to the noon hour get together. Jimmy John's provided a free light lunch for anyone who rode up on a bike. One of the LBS and the city's bike plan promoter were there to talk with people.

Every day is ride to work day for me, so I did not realize the significance of today until I got home. I typically see a lot of bikes on normal days, but don't think I saw an increase today. I did yell at a guy this morning for blowing a red light, though.

Glad that so many did the Ride to Work Day and had good rides. Con, I think you get the door Prize for hitting the deer. Whoa. Maybe the country will come to accept bicycle commuting in the coming years. Well done everyone.
