"New" stem

I've been thinking about changing the stem on my Felt to try different stem angles. Saw this on Felt's website and considered ordering it.
Yesterday I thought I'd check the stem I have to get the correct length.
Low and behold, the stem I have is adjustable just like the one in the link. So I shifted the shim to raise the stem 2 degrees (or maybe its 4 degrees??). I'll see how the bike feels on my next ride.

Glad I looked before ordering. Saved myself $40 plus shipping.

That's pretty cool. I've never seen an adjustable stem that uses shims. It has four possible positions, plus and minus 8 degrees and plus and minus 16 degrees. That's a pretty wide range.

The Specialized stem that came on my Roubaix has that feature. The stock stem was too long for that bike, so I replaced it with a different stem, but the Specialized stem works perfectly set for 8+ on my monstercross bike.

I'm not clear on how it has more than two different positions. Shim one way, shim the other way, flipped with shim one way, flipped with shim the other way?

This is on my wife's bike, and it works great.

The Specialized Pro-set stem has 3 different shims available, with two angles available from each shim by rotating the shim a 1/2 turn (four angles if you count flipping the stem). Twelve angles available in all from one stem. New bikes just come with one of the shims, but the dealers have them all. If you buy stem separately, you get all three shims.

You rotate the shim inside the stem. Notice that it is thick on one side, thin on the other. This difference changes the angle.

I was puzzled too but Ron H's pic clears it up. TAl's wife's stem is the one I bought for our tandem. I wanted the tandem to be very adaptable with x long seat posts (it has a sm stoker and xl captain's compartments) adjustable stoker stem, and adjustable captains stem. I can fit anyone from my 9 y/o grandson to my 6'4" son.

Those stems (Felt verion and Specialized ... I wonder if they're exactly the same, just re-badged?) work great. They are a little bit heavier than some of the lighweight stems, but not as heavy as real heavyweight ones.

Compared to other types of adjustable stems that have a hinge controlled by an allen bolt, these type look much nicer, like a normal stem and are definitely lighter, and you don't have a bolted hinge to get stripped or loosen. Just a good concept and design, imho.
