Retired? -- What were TODAY's activities?

OK - lets let those not retired what we do all day/

Today only- what did you do? It diesn't have to be "typical" - just today's activities.

Here are my activities:

6:00 am - awake

6:20 - eat 1/2 banana

6:30 - start bicycle ride

8:45 - while on bicycle ride, stop at McD's for a fruit and yogurt parfait, burrito, head to pool

9:00 - swim for 1 hour

10:15 - home,

11:00 - drive to Physical therapy, finish at 12:30, do some errands (because of errands involving large heavy box, I did not bicycle to PT, which I usually do.)

1:00 - lunch with wife, which I prepared

1:45 - work on cleaning out basement of junk

2:30 - nap

3:30 - replaced 4 smoke detectors which are 10 years old and starting to beep when they should not.

5:00 - drove to Wendy's toget a couple of baked potatoes, chili and a kiddie frosty, and brought them home to eat with wife.

6:00 got caught up on several listservs which I moderate

7:00 watching Olympic Trials on TV

8:00 - wife wants to watch something else - recorded on the DVR

And I will watch TV and read until about 10:00 and then snooze off.

So, there, you have one day in the life of a retiree.

I can't understand how someone can retire and be bored at home unless that person has NO interests, hobbies, or anything else to do.

7 am and out in the garden to look at a few projects to do---Just look at mind you.
8am and Start staining the decking round the pool.
10am and cover what I had done as the rain that was due in the PM came early.
11am and the rain had stopped so finish the decking
1pm in for lunch and then it was supposed to be Watch the TDF but the grandkids came round shortly after.
2pm and son-in-law came round to do some work on the RV that has an ignition problem.
3 pm and fine drizzle so stopped that and started clearing turf for the path that is going round the new chicken coop.
Around this time I put weed and feed on the lawns as the rain was going to wash it in fully.
6 pm and dinner but straight out afterwards to finish the path. (Only bark chippings but it is not a heavy use path)
8pm and stopped with half the path completed as there is always tomorrow.

No ride was planned and one did not happen and none are planned for this week due to rain.

But the path still needs finishing- the bike shed needs tidying (Take that as empty and find all the tools that are in the wrong place and restack) and all this is going to take place in between the periods of drought that we are still in. Little bit of rain never hurt anyone.

Next morning and raining so look for jobs in the rain. We have a willow tree over the chicken coop- and it has got a bit large. So trimmed the branches I could so I can get on with shredding for the path around the coops. Only got the first 15ft trimmed--I need a longer ladder.---Or-- and it will be arranged---a few of the lads from the road to come round and give me a hand. Don't mind heights but hard work for prolonged periods is not my forte. 2 hours spent on it and will be 4 hours shredding. Still raining.

Good grief! How people know what they did hour by hour is beyond me. My days are just a tableau of events. Yesterday I woke up around 5 AM and then did things like:

reconcile all my financial doings (income vs. debt stuff),

called an appliance repair guy to fix a dryer at my rental house,

went out for breakfast at a bagel place on my Ducati,

bought a few food "essentials" like coffee, almonds and pistachios,

went to a local pet store and bought dog food,

looked up some poetry on the internet,

went for a 17.5 mi. TT ride (16.4 mph),

went to see a friend who is a naturopath for some advice,

had a very lengthy conversation with an old HS friend about the recent (June 1st) death of my estranged wife,

had dinner with my gf,

sat outside and had some brandy and a cigar while watching the world in my backyard,

watched a little TV and

went to bed.

You replaced the batteries, not the whole unit right? When the batteries start to run down they beep every now and then to tell you this. Of course, replacing the complete detectors isn't going to hurt - other than a few $ extra.

Good man for maintaining them. Press the test button every month or so.

+1 Most of the time I can barely keep track of what I do. I sure don't worry about being productive, I had decades of that at work. If I get some down time, I read. I live two blocks from the library and put online holds on new books as soon as I read the review in the paper. I average about two books a week and only buy about one book a year.

Nope. I replaced the whole unit. They go bad after a few years, and were tweating with new batteries installed.

Did you dispose of the Americium safely? We have to have a container on the jobsite marked for nuclear waste and put detectors in the barrel and keep it sealed. It is then removed by a Nuke haz/mat disposer.

Yesterday, 2 cups of coffee to kick start the day, then stole one of my wife's Nutri System bars. Took the bike to do errands at the post office and CVS then rode to the beach and had some Gatorade and peanut butter crackers. Total of 18 miles on the bike. Back home to pay some bills and take the wife to lunch, fish tacos for me, crab burger for her. miles Long walk with the dog in the afternoon while smoking a delicious Arturo Fuente. Back home to do some laundry, catch up on the newspaper, watch some boob tube............then off to bed to read before dozing. Nice day all around. Did I say I love retirement??

7:45am: Got out of bed and wandered around the house.
8:10am: Ate a bowl of spelt flakes with blueberries and almond milk.
8:25am: Took all my vitamins and supplements.
8:35am: Checked my emails.
9:00am: Took a shower and got dressed.
9:30am: Loaded the car with our yoga stuff (mats, blankets, bolsters, yoga shorts).
10:00 am: We had a very nice private yoga class.
12:15pm: Went to lunch at our favorite Mexican restaurant.
1:40pm Got home and fell asleep watching a Netflix movie.
4:00pm: Checked the mail -- more bills.
4:10pm: Watched a Doc Martin rerun (on Acorn TV).
6:00pm: My wife went out with a girlfriend to buy art supplies (drawing/painting) and I set up the sprinkler in the front yard (can you spell drought?).
6:20pm: Watched the next episode of Five Days on Netflix.
7:40pm: Picked up my wife at the friends's house.
8:30pm: Watched an old rerun of Inspector Lewis on Netflix.
10:10pm: Bedtime.

FYI: We don't have cable. We cut that off last August. We were paying $80/month and only watching 3-4 shows a week. We have an antenna in the attic and can get ~40 local channels. I wish NBC Sports was on a local channel so I could watch the TdF.

Insert riding around 10:00am - 10:30am every other day. Yesterday was yoga day. Today is ride day.

I read in "spasms." I'm always reading or re-reading some philosophy and at times get immersed in novels. Recently read the "Hunger Games" trilogy in three days. Have to say the first book was interesting in that it was a novel concept. But, the second and third were dumb IMO.

I don't know why I even opened this thread.

Someone posted recently about the differences between those of us here who are 70+ and those who are 50+. I think the real, substantive differences come down to who's retired and who isn't.

I deleted that thread, which I started. Within 5 posts, it had taken a nasty turn by someone, and, being retired, I don't have to put up with nasty turns. Poof - it went away!!

It's all that "Spare" time some of us have on our hands that is the problem. Now do I do things I want to do?-- or ones that have to be done?

I am still at the stage where it is 50/50 but can't wait till the shed is done- the house painted- the tree is down and I have time to cut the lawn twice a week. But by that time- I will have other jobs to do.

Many years ago- I was told if you want a job done properly--Find someone that has too much to do already. They know how to manage time and jobs in the right priority. Just don't ask me to do another job--The waiting list is into 2013 already.

Woke up... had breakfast.
Filled a water bottle and got the mountain bike out of the garage.
Headed north toward the local mountains. A combination of riding and walking got me to Mulholland Highway at San Vicente Peak. (above Los Angeles, old Nike control base)
Rode back and forth along Mulholland, enjoying the birdsong, rabbits hopping about, flowers (although these are fading) and the low clouds flying over the ridge.
Decided to return on another route, and then on whim took a side trail back into Mandeville Canyon.
Rolled down Mandeville smoothly, pedalling to stay warm.
Arrived home and started making lunch.
The rest of the day? Who knows. I have a fascinating book on geology of the western US that I'm reading ("Rough-hewn Land," by Keith Heyer Meldahl) and some vanquishing to do in Guild Wars.

Woke up, got out of bed, dragged a comb across my head... No, wait... wrong song. Maybe "9 to 5" would be more accurate, except for the numbers.

I've been retired for 10 years now. It took me about 3 years to give myself permission to do nothing so I don't feel guilty I'm doing nothing special.

One thing for sure I DO NOT do anything ,except doctor appointments, while watching the clock.

I took my wrist watch off the day I retired 'cause I don't care what time it is anymore.

Along the way I adopted this sentiment.......I have a full schedule of nothing to do and if I hurry I might get half of it done!

That is how I live my life to day... no plans ,no pressure, no worries.

Woke up and had breakfast,

Went to my father in laws coffee club for an hour,

Returned home and watched some TV,

Had lunch and watched more TV,

Took my father in law to the doctor's office, 30 miles away; whereI am currently at.

Not much of an activity filled day today, but tomorrow morning I will drive the 20 miles to Savanna and ride the trail again.
