sharrows coming to Encinitas
This is admittedly an advocacy and safety issue, but several of the folks who made it happen are in the 60+ category.
On Wednesday night the Encinitas City Council voted unanimously to install right lane sharrows and "bikes may use full lane" signs on all sections of Coast Highway 101 which lack Class II bike lanes. Pete Penseyres -- an Oceanside resident and the 1984 RAAM winner (and record holder for many years) -- gave a good pitch. I pointed out that I had better bicycle-friendly facilities on my 35-mile round-trip commute to the new University City UCSD Extension complex near Governor Dr. and I-805 than I did on the 101 through my own neighborhood.
This is serious progress in the city I have called home for 31 years (half my life).

Great news! Progress takes years - hopefully with these, the next generation of drivers will "get it" that we're not just annoyances blocking their path. My city added these to a few main arteries, and it will eventually raise awareness.

Wow, this is fantastic news! Having just ridden on 101 through Encinitas today, it's not a day too soon. Especially when horse racing season starts, 101 is a zoo. I felt reasonably safe only because I was in a group of about 40 riders, and we took the entire lane. But riding alone there this morning, I nearly got taken out by a tourist who forgot there was a bike lane to his right. For years, Encinitas-Leucadia has been the worst stretch in north county ( excepting, perhaps, 101 near Via de la Valle in Del Mar). Now it will be one of the best.
