Didn't ride, went fly fishing
Gave up going on a 30 mile ride with the local shop because it was just too hot and decided to go trout fishing. One thing nice about trout fishing is it's always cool on the water. Local temps were 100-109!! On the water....comfortable. In the water...cold! Gotta love trout streams. Caught 30 Sunday morning after being skunked on Saturday all day. Just found out where they were. The town we were in hit 104 but at night camping next to the water it was 65-67. Comfortable.

Start your rides really early. I try to start around 5:30 to 6, or 6:30 AM.

BBW - where did you go a-fishin'? I don't usually think of West Tennessee has being much in the way of trout waters.
You made a good choice. Only activity I have found as relaxing as cycling can be is fishing.

. We usually go to Arkansas but a friend was going to East Tn to kayak and we tagged along.

Seriously-I am seriously jealous. I had morning and evening commitments and went for a 2 hour ride in the 108 heat from 2-4. Stinking burned me up, I would have preferred setting the hook on something slimy!

Fly-fished for the first time in years and caught my first Arctic Grayling at a stream outlet to a lake by our cabin in Yukon, just over a week ago. Beautiful fish - and good eating as well. I think I'll get back to fly-fishing for Smallmouth Bass here in Ontario this summer. I like the rhythm of casting, the challenge of improving casting technique (I have a way to go!), and the focus required to keep your eye on that fly!

As a kid, my grandparents lived in Mt Home, AR. Used to fish the White River. Moved to the Norris, TN area from Nashville at about 12, and couldn't figger out why folks talked about trout in terms of inches. We always used pounds to describe them on the White and Norfork.
My wife and I are hoping for a combined cycling/fishing vacation to Montana next summer. Coolest part is that it was HER idea!

You are right. Hit the wrong letters when registering and didn't notice til afterwards. Oh well. Good spot though.
That is the Hiwasee river. We also fished the Tellico and North. In Arkansas we fish the Little Red mainly. World.class.stream. But one thing we have to watch in the Tennessee/Arkansas area with our rivers is the dam generation schedules and rapid water risings. Have to know when to get out..........or else!! Can be very, very dangerous.

The Hiawasee is a beautiful river - we used to float the Tellico in inner tubes as a boy scout. Just beautiful country. I get nostalgic for it, until the temps hit what they do in the summer there and we are cycling in sunny 75 degree weather out here. But I would love to do a fishing/cycling vacation to East TN or Western NC. Beautiful country.

I love the post and picture. Fly fishing fishing my first love and mistress. Have been but twice this year. Hot and dry here, was that way last year. three years ago floods. Tomorrow morning around 5:00am wife and I are taking a drive to Bull Shoals/White River State Park Ark. We are planning on a camping trip there in mid Oct.
