I lived in Lincoln for many, MANY years. The folks that started this are some great people. They really worked hard for a number of years to get this going. For this to have happened to them is, frankly, unbelievable. But, thieves are everywhere and are out for whatever they can get from someone else's hard work.

Send them an email of encouragement if you can or, if you have an extra tool or two, how about sending it their way.....

What a lowlife to steal tools, and that it was a charity that fixes bicycles for others just takes the cake. Sending an email to them and will send a donation for the new tool fund. Thanks for the heads up Beast.

I posted this on Facebook to all the groups that I belong to. Please feel free to do the same. These folks worked extremely hard to get this going. It was in the works before I moved from Lincoln in 2008. So it's not just some fly-by-night group. It took them a long, LONG time to get it going. A little help or words of encouragement is greatly appreciated.

Sent the email earlier, I'll post an address for donations when they respond to my lines. This just makes me sick to my stomach for hard working, honest people to be stripped of their work tools. And a charity to boot.

Anyone got any string?

I think I have an old rusty derailleur cable that would do nicely.

I might have a couple of extra tools, I'll check and see.

I volunteer at a charity bike shop. We collect donated bikes, repair/clean them and sell them. The procedes go to the charity. Last year we sold approx 2500 bikes. The bikes range in price from $10 for small kids bikes, to $100+ for bikeshop quality bikes. We get all kinds, age, and condition bikes. The shop borders a low income area, although the people buying the bike come from every economic strata. Some people will buy a bike, and donate extra. Others need the cheapest transportation they can get. The volunteers are mostly bike geeks, and we usually have a good time doing good.
A constant problem is the theft of bikes. Every thing from prying the front door open, to running in and grabing the first bike they can get their hands on has been done. It happens about once a month. Since we don't pay for the bikes, the monetary loss isn't that big of a deal, but you have to be pretty low to steal from a place that is helping kids in your own neighborhood.
I feel for the Bike Kitchen.

Thank you for posting this. I also send an e-mail asking how I can help, to either by sending some unused tools or money to help them replace what is needed. This would be an opportunity for Park Tools to foster some good will, (not that they need any - they are a good company).

I received a reply email from the gentleman at Bike Kitchen, Lincoln, Nebraska, this afternoon. Here is the complete email with their address if anyone wants to send a donation for the tool replacement:

Someone should tell them about Paypal...I would email a donation right away, too darn lazy to go find the checkbook, find an envelope, and stamps, then write it all out...I don't pay any bills by check anymore

I know this is a summer time zombie thread but I wanted to add that I received a very nice thank-you note form the Lincoln Bike Kitchen people last week. It was a handwritten card and it was signed by everyone there. I thought this was a nice gesture on their part to thank everyone that donated to them when they were burglarized.
