We spent a few days in Madison, Chicago and Toledo. Saw this bike rack and others like it in Toledo. Don't know that I've ever seen any like them before.

Are you referring to the crocheted cover ?

freedomrider1 07-21-12 10:24 AM

I live in the Toledo area and have seen these.I just lean bike against it. And now a question for you, What the heck were you in Toledo?lost a bet,,jk

Litespeedlouie 07-21-12 10:29 AM

I'm told they're called ribbon-style racks. Pretty common here.

missjean 07-21-12 10:45 AM

It's what's know as Yarn Bombing - knitters going all wild & crazy.

Yes.

Hope that the council get out with the degreaser before the 20 little old ladies that made it get to come and view their handiwork.

CrankyFranky 07-21-12 01:27 PM

What FUN!

fredschwinn 07-21-12 01:33 PM

Saves a lot of bikes from getting scratched up I imagine.

miss kenton 07-21-12 01:51 PM

It is a painful reminder of attempts I've made to make my husband a sweater.

John_V 07-21-12 01:55 PM

Those type of bike racks are all over Tampa. Never seen any with a knitted cover but they are certainly different.

rubic 07-21-12 02:32 PM

I see these types of racks all over the place. However, this is the first time I have seen one with all those decorations.

Bikey Mikey 07-21-12 02:35 PM

It's called yarn bombing.

Obviously, SOMEBODY has too much yarn on their hands.

Making a tour of minor league ball parks. So, we had to see were the Mud Hens play.

freedomrider1 07-21-12 04:02 PM

The Hens are having a tough year.Nice ball park. You probably know that Jim Leyland the Tigers manager is from the Toledo area.

Northwestrider 07-21-12 04:09 PM

never with a cover

Retro Grouch 07-21-12 04:26 PM

Now I want to know how they do that. Surely it's not crocheted in place.

Looks too pretty to use. Do you suppose that's why it's empty?

Shoot, I'm a big long-time Tigers fan and didnt know that.

The crocheted cover in a place like Toledo? Wow. Is Detroit next?

Toledo has a rich and vibrant arts community, and this is just one sign of it.

BluesDawg 07-22-12 02:09 PM

The cover is a good idea and a nice touch, but that sine wave style of rack is much less efficient than a series of individual U sections. You can put 5 bikes on that rack, but with four U racks, 8 bikes could be locked up.

LesterOfPuppets 07-22-12 02:15 PM

We had one done up like that and as Bill mentioned, it didn't last long, just a slouchy bit left here and there.

Usually 4 staples would cost a bit more but it looks like they would fit fine in that location. Sometimes there is room for a ribbon like that but not for staples running perpendicular.

sknhgy 07-22-12 03:05 PM

My wife crochets. It gets to be an obsession. She has bags of stuff she's done down in the basement. Some of it could be put to good use, covering bike racks, etc.

You clearly don't know knitters. Every knitter has way too much yarn on their hands. They can buy yarn way faster than they can use it.

It's far more likely to have been done by twenty- and thirty-somethings. Please stop assuming (incorrectly) that all craftswomen are "little old ladies." Even those of us who are fast approaching little-old-ladyhood find your condescension offensive.

I just forgot, that's all; my mother used to knit when I was in high school. It was like the yarn was BREEDING........

freighttraininguphill 07-25-12 10:53 AM

Saw this thread and remembered the bike rack outside our local bicycle co-op, the Sacramento Bicycle Kitchen. I got a pic of it yesterday.
