Dog days of summer

The dog star, Sirius is fairly high in the sky by early morning. It's the brightest thing up there, except for the full moon, so you can't miss it. To the ancient Egyptians Sirius signaled the Nile flood. For many here in N. America, these are the "lazy, crazy, hazy days of summer". Out of self preservation in high heat perhaps, it seems we all slow down somewhat. Not only people, but rivers and streams slow and plant growth turns to ripening.

In the past I've ridden the bike into autumn until ski season. This year I'm taking time off the bike, maybe a week of R&R. I'm riding longer and somewhat harder these days so that planned rest should be part of the mix. I can ride through the winter except for some snow here and there so in the long run I'll get more miles in.

Noticeable here that the evenings are drawing in - dark at 6.30 pm, which is the time for Ifthar, breaking the fast in the middle (full moon) of the holy month of Ramadan for those who observe it. A month ago it was still light at 7.30 pm.

Also, relatively cooler. Still very hot, up to 42 C midday, but not 48 as we saw a few weeks ago.

I'm away back to UK tomorrow. Just for a break, as it occurs, although I had thought I'd be back to stay - but I was asked to stay here for a while. Not sure how I'll like torrential rain and 12 C. It'll probably be a delight, for about 10 minutes

All summer means to me is earlier and maybe shorter rides. Down from 45 to 30-35. I don't care for snow and cold so I don't live where it gets all that cold and snow.
