Too Hot Today

Today on my Sunday ride (about 102 degrees F), about 10 miles into the ride I hit Edgemere Park (El Paso, TX) on that long stretch between Hawkins and Airway (where Burges High is), and kicked it up to about 18 mph and suddenly I BURST INTO FLAMES!!!!! I was really lucky that it happened right next to the fire station, those guys are fast!! I'm ok, nobody worry!! Shoulda brought the Mule, I'm tellin' you.

Not enough hydration. More water or electrolytes and your hair wouldn't have been dry enough to catch fire. Friday it hit 104 here and I got it up to 22 for 6 miles and all it did was make my skull cap smoke.

Maybe you should strap a small fire extinguisher to your frame.

It's been brutal out there lately. On my ride last Friday, I took a sip of water and "Yuck!". I opened the top of the bottle and the water was bubbling as if it were at the boiling point. I knew it was warm/hot water, but not quite that hot.

Ride safe everyone. Don't try to go over your capacity, like I tried to do.

It is hot here too. I filled my water bottles with ice and it was gone in 45 minutes. I rode very short today. It is not worth it to get into heat trouble.

It's a good thing you weren't riding one of those bamboo or cardboard bikes. Yikes!!

I've been putting my bottles in the freezer overnight (Polar bottles, so some insulation); Caffe Latte Perpetuem in one, Gatorade in the other. Won't last the whole day, of course, but good for a couple of hours.

Then when/if I do find a place with ice later on, I just fill the bottles with ice and fill the spaces between the ice cubes with water (or whatever Gatorade, PowerAid, etc.). Works for me. 106 Deg.F here Sunday; thankfully a bit cooler now.
