My bikes can now travel in style. 2010 Toyota Tacoma with an ARE MX cap (camper shell) and a Bedrug on the bed and tailgate. A 1x4 board with two Xport bike mounts and an old inter tube stretched around the board for cushioning. Two bikes if is just a bike outing, or just one bike and luggage if it is longer trip.

Sweet.. but why take wheels off? Looks like you could secure bikes some how without taking wheels off.

I haul mine in the back of my Audi A4 Avant (Audi-speak for station wagon). The wheels stay on. I just lay the Fuji on it's side...put a thick foam pad over it...lay the Masi on top. Works really well for us. Your setup looks pretty slick.

I believe he has to take off the front wheels or the rear hatch won't close.

Nice bike hauler. Makes it nice when you travel and don't have to worry about leaving your bikes exposed to the elements and those that think they need them more than you do.

We have a Ford Transit that we bought specifically for carrying my bike and the wife's tadpole trike. It has more room than what we need, even with both bikes in the van. Still need to finish the back panels like we want them. They are almost done, but I don't want to put them up until they are completed. All we have to do is to quit changing our minds as to where we want things to go.



The van makes it extra nice because I also have great access from the each of the sides. Although it looks like the crankset is over the driver's head, it really is between the two seats and has plenty of room before getting close to the driver. When we are on the road, it also has an attachment, that goes in the decking, to keep the trike from going forward.

Looks nice, John. My wife and I will be in a similar situation when she gets her tadpole (and maybe one for me a bit later on). She's even mentioned the Transit as a possible hauler, but she's put off by the mileage numbers.

Four touring bikes and touring gear. However,it is a tight fit. With road bikes (no racks) it is a little easier. Even with the bikes on top, it still gets 10-12 miles/gallon better than my truck. The Toyota Matrix (Corolla platform) will also haul 4 people in relative comfort. When it just my wife and I, 2 bikes fit inside when the rear seat is folded down.

We are getting between 26-29 miles highway an 24+ miles city. We took it on a trip to Illinois right after we bought it and we were getting around 26 highway while in the mountains. My wife even likes it and she had a Nissan Altima that was getting 32 mpg highway. I think that when you start looking, you are going to find very few vehicles that will take a recumbent trike, unless they are foldable. When we were looking, the only other type of vehicle we found that would work was a regular van. Even some of the Mimi-vans didn't work. With two trikes, it makes it even harder to find something they will both fit in. In my pickup, the boom on her trike went past the tailgate.

I just got a mini-van, need to take the rearmost seat out of it, just to haul baby gear, might try stuffing bikes in there too.....

I got the ARE MX cap which gives me enough head room so I do not have to take the seatpost off, but there is not enough head room if the front wheel is left on. The rear wheels are still on, only the front wheels are removed. Besides, the front wheel comes off and back on with very little effort, and the front fork in the bike mounts make for a very firm and secure mount. Even when making a hard stop or sharp turns, the bikes do not move at all. I thought I would have to secure the board to the bed of the truck, but that has not been neccessary.

Ok, i see it better now, i have a Astro van and i hook a buggie cord to the coat hook and it goes around the bike to the floor and hooks in to the place where the seat attaches.
