Hip joint and knee pain

Did a hard ride on Saturday.
Saturday evening I had pain at the top of my right kneecap, kinda like a bruise. Feeling it a little when I walk today.
Now today, I'm feeling it in both hip joints.
Am I just old or is there maybe a problem with my bike fit?

First hard ride in a while? or just an ordinary ride?

I rode Saturday-25 miles- Sunday 30 miles and tonight 15 with the local club. I ache now but that may also be due to taking out 3 small tree stumps and looking at the two bigger ones that still have to come out.

Get some recovery time in and see if things improve. If it does fine but if not-- it could be bike fit- or Bike personal fitness.

If this is a customary hard Saturday ride, then perhaps you rode too hard the week prior and are feeling some overuse. If I change my position, I might conclude I'd overdone the saddle height, bar drop, .....

If this was a hard ride in the sense of "hardest Saturday ride I've done", then I'd say go easy for a few days and keep riding; you probably just overdid things a bit. BTW, I much prefer bilateral discomfort as point to overuse versus a "condition". The knew could be anything combined with overuse: one leg shorter than the other, hinky pedal stroke, etc.

Could be your IT band and/or quads. Bike fit will definitely do it too if it's a bad fit, but if you've been riding for awhile then it's probably just a strain. Do some light stretches and you can ice the area for 20 minutes, then let it warm up for at least 40 minutes. Do the ice after you are done riding or done for the day. Make sure you do a good stretch before you ride, etc. Look up on line how to stretch the quads and IT band. You can also get a paper/foam cup, fill it with water and freeze it, then tear the upper layer off of the cup and massage the muscles by applying pressure from bottom to top, then just let the ice slide back down not using any pressure. again, no more than 20 minutes.

If you keep having problems, go see your Doc or a good orthopedist. Sounds more like an over-use injury at this point, so walk sideways up stairs and hills and try not to bend your knee too much. After things start feeling better, you'll need to do some strengthening exercises. Straight leg raises can be done in all four directions and you can do them while watching TV during the commercials.

Hope this helps. It's just a short explanation but not much else I can do without giving you a hands on eval, so that's why you may need to go see your doc.

When I have "pain in the hip joints" it's not really in the joints. Rather, it's pain from sore hip flexors. Should that be the case in your situation, the following link might be helpful.

Don't screw around with it though. Not to scare you, but in 2004, while playing golf, I felt a twinge in the hip. Messed around with my doctor (who is good and I trust). Come today, two hips, 1 in 2008, the other in 2009. If you have recurring problems, see an orthopedic surgeon.

EDIT: and I ride just fine (other than the old, fat and slow part = 15mph avg. for 30 miles), and it feels great to ride. I do stairs all the time as well, no problem whatsoever.

You read enough times about knee pain around here, but I didn't think hip pain was even a possibility from cycling.

I had a serious hip problem and used a cane for about 3 years. During that time I never had a problem cycling. I just made a holster for the cane and took it with me on the bike.
