TAKING THE LANE...

I usually ride on trails. But there is a single 300 yard stretch of road that connects 2 trails that I ride on. At the end of it -- by a bend in the road -- is a narrow, 2 lane bridge that is JUST wide enough for two cars to pass safely. But NOT 2 cars and a bike...

A couple days ago I stayed to the right and a car came up behind while another was coming the other way... We all got squeezed pretty tight.

Today I took the lane and again a car came up behind me while another was coming in the opposite direction. This time the car behind me waited.
...... MUCH BETTER!

"No person may open any door of a motor vehicle located on a highway without first taking due precaution to ensure that his or her act will not interfere with the movement of traffic or endanger any other person or vehicle."

This is the law that was enacted in 2009 in wi after the incident where the cyclist got a ticket.

A cyclist got a ticket for getting doored?

I hope the link works, it happened in 2008.

Granted she was in the door area, but it seems the driver of the vehicle didn't check to ensure that it was safe to open the door. Glad there was a law passed to stop that type of ticketing. I will say that a cyclist should try not to travel close enough to be doored--unfortunately to do so may well mean the cyclist must take the lane and if that is the case signage should indicate that cyclists are allowed to do so. Without notification of the right for a cyclist to take a lane, I fear some idiot in a car, in a hurry or because of road rage, would hit a cyclist.

I think that would be a difficult case: she was parked and out of her car -- and she spoke with the OP and he let her leave without any protest. But, it does sound like she bears liability for the accident.

While looking up laws concerning a charge that a driver I know has against them, I found out that in California, if the injured person leaves the scene of an accident, and even if they are not at fault, they can be charged with hit and run with injury or death.

How you feeling jlstrat?

Happened to me over 50 years ago on my way to college. I took the car door right off. My hand-built Maclean was banged up, but I got away with grazes and bruises. The driver blamed me, but the police thought otherwise. His insurance paid up.

door zone ... if you can't ride out of it, you shouldn't be on that road.

Still in some pain, but I rode 100K on Saturday. I rode to work yesterday, but I may take a couple of days to let my chest heal a little more. No breaks, no lumps, just a buise in a color of purple and yellow I've never seen before. I also found a route home with less traffic, but more stop signs, which may add some time to my ride. It's safer, though, and may let me work in some interval training.

Thanks, as always, for advice and comments.

That's great!

Sometimes its better to retreat and live to ride (yet) another day!

Rode to work Monday, but yesterday I had a meeting after work and it was raining so I skipped. This AM was foggy, so it made sense not to ride in the early morning fog. Seems like my shoulder and chest are benefitting from some time off. Don't want to be too lazy and blow off the rest of the week.

Silly comment, with all due respect. In my case, the passenger opened the door into the bike lane.

Suit yourself. I don't ride in the door zone. I also don't stay in the bike lane if there is a parked car in middle of the bike lane.

The car wasn't parked; it was in the car lane and the door opened into the bike lane. I'm suiting myself, thanks.
