Cool story.

Here in Nebr especially in the early spring it is not unusual to have winds in the 40 MPH range with gusts into the 50s. While I usually dont ride when the winds are that high I have a few time. When they are that high I alway take my trike, since my aero profile is much less. The wind and the trike sure gives me an advantage against the DF riders.

I did a short ride into a 35mph headwind last spring and that was only because I was desperate to try out an N+1. Futility aside I turned up on a more sheltered street until it was time to put the wind at my back.

A couple of weeks ago I was commuting on my trike in a storm, wind gusts of 35-40 mph the weather people said. I was doing all right, even though wind driven rain stung and I got soaked, that was no big deal. But I'd forgotten about the windblown SAND. I weathered it okay, but my trike's drivetrain got cranky (pardon the expression) and it took several cleaning sessions to get all the sand out... I'll not be doing that again if I can help it.

Been in some tough wind. The toughest has always been in the desert. I have been in the Mojave when the winds moved from cross to headwind at a blink of the eye and Tumbleweads launched over our heads as it hit the small pitch next to the side of the road. I had ridden one stretch during a tour a half a dozen times and struggled mightily to maintain 7 mph only to find out that there was a slight downgrade and with no wind our group easily maintained 25 on the same road when there was no wind.

I have some rough days on the coast as well most notably on the 1 between Big Sur and SLO but it was more gusty and there were a few places to hide. The desert offers no breaks or places to hide

Coming across the Anza with a group of kids we have hit vicious winds I think four times somewhere in the 30mph range right in your teeth

Just this late fall, as I was returning from a 45 mile ride and racing a cold front home, I encountered a micro-burst of wind from the side and thought that the bike would be blown out from under me (the bike became very "light" under me). This occurred twice more, both as I crested the tops of hills, surrounded by open farm fields. Other times I've had my helmet blown down sideways on my head. This spring, I was cycling the Outer Banks Seashore at Buxton, riding into 35+ mph headwinds for about 17-18 miles out, north one day and south the next, and enjoyed a he** of a tailwind back. Just before the Motel, I was blown across the road at 35 mph, steered straight, and survived without injury (or broken wheels).

I ride in wind nearly each time. The wind blows ALL the time in Central TX! The toughest wind I can remember was over Thanksgiving. NE wind 30-35 mph gust. I was constantly see sawing back and forth into the side winds and at one time, I swear I felt my front tire slide to the left!

I routinely ride when there are small craft warnings and gale force winds. Used to bother me but I've gotten used to it. Just takes longer. I don't go out when it is really bad, like tropical storm bad, because the flying derbies becomes a serious a hazard.
